The lorry, loaded with tar, was heading towards Pirmasens on the B10 when it collided with the oncoming double-decker bus carrying the students at around 4:50 am. The truck driver was reportedly distracted by his navigation system, leading him to swerve into the oncoming traffic. The impact resulted in shattered glass on the left side of the bus, with debris stretching for more than 150 meters. Despite the severity of the collision, no students were injured, and the bus was still partially operational, allowing it to leave the scene on its own.

The 53-year-old lorry driver was the only person left with minor injuries, primarily due to the broken windows. The damage caused by the crash was estimated to be in the mid five-figure range. The B10 was closed in both directions until 9 am, and the truck had to be towed away.
