Ricky Gervais is a comedian known for his work on the UK version of The Office. He has also performed a ton of stand-up shows for audiences around the world. His comedy is often controversial and seen as offensive.

One of Gervais’ most memorable moments came when he hosted the Golden Globe Awards. His brand of humor targeted the very stars who were in the audience. Gervais’ jokes and the celebrities’ reaction shots went viral and birthed several memes.

Gervais’ brand of humor calls out what he sees as phony and hypocritical behavior. This is something the comedian continued to do when he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2017. At the start of the chat, Fallon made a remark that sent Gervais off on a four-and-a-half-minute tirade.

Ricky Called Out Hollywood During His Monologue While Hosting The Golden Globes

When he hosted the Golden Globes in 2020, Gervais’s monologue called out what he saw as the phony and hypocritical behavior of Hollywood stars. When speaking to The Guardian in 2021, Gervais proudly defended his routine and calling out the stars in the room.

“Do I pander to the 200 billionaires in the room or the 200 million people at home sitting in their pants drinking beer who aren’t winning awards, who aren’t billionaires?” Gervais said. “It’s a no-brainer for a comedian. I’m a jester. I play to the other peasants in the mud. I wasn’t going in terrible. Think of the things I could have said.”

“Think of the f****** terrible things I could have joked about. It’s off the charts – It’s. Off. The. Charts – the terrible things I could say.”

The reaction shots showed that not every star in the room was amused by Gervais’ material. However, there was one actor who complimented the comedian.

“Robert De Niro was just crying with laughter when I made a joke about Hugh Hefner and his young bride, Gervais recalled. “He called me after a week and said: ‘I wanna say you did a great job.’ ‘Oh man,’ I said, ‘I annoyed some people.’ He said: ‘F*** ’em, they were jokes.’”

Gervais is aware that not everyone will get the point of his humor. In his live show SuperNature, Gervais explained the point of his jokes for the audience.

“I say, ‘That’s when I say something I don’t really mean for comic effect and you, as an audience, laugh at the wrong thing because you know what the right thing is.’ I challenge them to be offended and they never are of course, because they get it.”

Despite this, Gervais said that he always hopes to offend someone. The reason being that if he hasn’t done so, he believes, he’s failed.

“You have to provoke! It’s a good thing. Learning provokes, science provokes, opinion provokes. Offense provokes.”

As Gervais was preparing to host the Globes for a second time, he stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about his first time hosting the ceremony. DeGeneres asked Gervais why he wanted to host the show a second time.

“The reason I said yes the first time was because I was very flattered,” he said. “It was a huge global audience for a comedian. I like writing jokes. That’s what I do. The reason I did it the second time was I thought I could improve on the first. Which, I think I did. I wasn’t going to do it again but there were loads of people in the press saying I’d never be invited back and that’s why I said yes.”

Gervais also touched on how shocked many seemed by his material.

“I knew what I was doing,” he said. “It’s the same as stand-up. I know where the gasps are going to come. I know when the laughs are going to come…I knew all that. I didn’t think the press would…I mean you usually have to kill someone to get that many columnists. They were still talking about it, so I was shocked at the reaction. Yeah, yeah, I was.”

Gervais continued, “I don’t think I was nasty. If they saw my stand-up, their heads would explode. People say is there anything you shouldn’t joke about? I don’t think there is. I just think it depends what the joke is. Comedy comes from either a good or a bad place, and I was just teasing them, ya know. It wasn’t a room full of wounded soldiers. These are the richest, most privileged people in the world.”

Ricky Called Out What He Felt Were Jimmy Fallon’s Fake Compliments When He Was On ‘The Tonight Show’

Since Gervais has a history of calling out what he perceives to be phony behavior and hypocrisy, it should come as no surprise he did just that in a memorable talk show interview.

Gervais appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2017. During his appearance on the show, Fallon began by telling the comedian that he “looks great.”

Gervais didn’t think this was a genuine compliment and called Fallon out.

“I look great? Is that sarcasm?” Gervais asked.

Gervais then went off on a rant about his appearance.

“You see, this is the thing with you, the talk show, ‘Oh you look great.’ Even though, look at me! Of course I don’t look great!”

Gervais went on for about four-and-a-half-minutes about weight gain and even swore during the rant. This led Fallon to look off-camera and playfully cut Gervais off in an effort to continue with the interview.
