The teenagers – believed to have played together in the same youth rugby team from the age of ten – were travelling for a night out when the ‘serious collision’ happened at around 7pm on Monday.

The group are understood to have driven four miles from their homes in the Tonypandy area of Rhondda, South Wales, to the village of Coedely, near Tonyrefail, when tragedy struck.

Naming the three victims, police said Jesse and Morgan were from Tonypandy and Callum was from nearby Porth, Rhondda.

Emergency services were sent to the former mining village and police urged the public to refrain from ‘speculation and rumour’.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council deputy mayor Dan Owen-Jones – one of the first at the scene – described it as ‘horrific’.

Another local councillor Danny Grehan said: ‘This is going to hit the area very hard. A shockwave will go through the whole community.

‘The pain is obviously going to be felt by the families of those who are part of this but also in the whole community.’

South Wales Police said the two young men who survived the crash, aged 18 and 19, were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff with life-threatening injuries.

Two other people, thought to have been on the bus, were also treated for minor injuries.

The road remained closed yesterday while investigations into the collision continued.

Superintendent Esyr Jones, of South Wales Police, said: ‘Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident. Trained family liaison officers are supporting the families.’
