Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Scanlon had quite the comeback to Anton Du Beke after he joked she was “grumpy” following her departure from the 2023 series last month. The presenter gave it her all on the show with Carlos Gu, but despite their impressive efforts, the pair missed out on a slot in quarter-final round.

Discussing the show with the dancer turned judge on her Virgin Radio show this week, Anton, 57, had nothing but praise for Angela’s moves and said her 40-winning Charleston in particular was one of his three favourite dances of the series. He shared: “It is lovely to be able to watch people develop over the weeks. I mean, I loved watching you dance with Carlos.

“It was a great thrill every time you came out and performed and, you want to see if there’s an improvement, if there’s things that you’ve discussed, and you’ve mentioned, and then there’s an improvement moving forward and when there is just a delight.”

Although flattered by his comments, Angela, 39, mentioned some of the judges’ critique she had received at the time, to which he jokingly replied: “I’m sure you’ll come around eventually.”

As Anton went on to discuss his upcoming performances in panto and on tour, the presenter asked if there were any stories he’d be sharing with his fans amongst the dancing. The Strictly judge joked there was a tale he was set to tell about a “tremdendous Irish girl” he once met.

“Listen, stick it in there, she replied, to which he joked: “A little grumpy when she got voted off, but other than that she’s nice.”

Taken aback by his words, she replied: “Heartbroken I think you’ll find!”

In a cheeky swipe about his not so successful partnerships on the show, she added: “There’s a difference between those emotions, not that you’re tuned into them Anton!

“It used to happen to you so early on you never really got the full sting of it.”

“Oh, here we go,” he replied, acknowledging the dig.

Laughing, she added: “I love you really Anton!”

Angela’s time on the show came to an end after three of the four judges chose to save Layton Williams over her in a dance-off ahead of the quarter-final.

Speaking to host Tess Daly after the result, the BBC presenter said she was “really gutted” but had “the most wonderful experience”.

Turning to Carlos, she added: “I have made the best friend in this man.

“We have had so much fun, he is such an incredible guy. He has supported me and picked me up and made me laugh so much. I don’t know what to say, it’s been magical honestly – all of those people up there! My husband at home, my two little girls and all my friends!”

Carlos added of Angela: “Her commitment and her strength every day, day by day – I’m a professional dancer and she works so hard, harder than me!

“Look at her now – I am so proud, her sense of humour and we had so much fun everyday – she cracks me up laughing!”
