During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Anne said she thought Margot did a brilliant job, better than she believes she could’ve done herself.
“Margot is sublime. What she is doing as a creative person and a producer is so exciting and inspiring,” Anne said.
“If I believed that the version I was attached to could have done that, I might feel differently about it,” she continued, calling Margot’s version the “best possible version” she believes any film studio could’ve produced.
Anne emphasized that she loved the project became female-led. “I love watching women kill it,” she said, adding she’s “thrilled and happy” for Margot.
While Amy Schumer was initially being tapped for the role, Hathaway was then considered when Amy backed out. However, the Barbie film was scrapped for a time being, before Margot teamed up with director Greta Gerwig to bring it back to life. While Margot has said she didn’t see herself in the lead role at first, she eventually embraced the iconic character fully.
