Barbie expert decodes hidden meaning behind Margot Robbie and Billie Eilish’s Oscars looks

Barbie expert Kathy Pierich has revealed the secret meanings behind Billie Eilish and Margot Robbie’s Barbie-inspired outfits at the Oscars.

The stars, particularly Margot, have been spotted wearing clothes that match old, vintage dolls during their promotional events.

This time around, it was Billie Eilish who channelled major Barbie vibes.

Billie, who bagged an Oscar for her song What Was I Made For?, graced the red carpet in a tartan skirt and black jacket. She completed her look with Mary Jane shoes and white socks.

According to Kathy, Billie’s outfit was likely inspired by 2005’s The Teacher Barbie.

The Teacher Barbie sports a black-and-white skirt of similar length to Billie’s. Instead of a blazer, she wears a buttoned vest but shares the same white shirt as Billie.

Despite the different outerwear, the style of each is strikingly similar.

Another key detail was Billie’s ‘Artist4Ceasefire’ pin, which stood out in bright red against her jacket.

The doll, instead of wearing a pin, sports a red bow around her neck. Billie cleverly took this small detail and turned it into something modern and relevant.

Of course, this wasn’t a direct copy of the look but rather a tasteful reimagining.

Kathy also hinted that the outfit drew inspiration from 1963’s Career Girl and 1966’s Pretty as a Picture.

Margot’s co-star America Ferrera arrived in classic Barbie pink which Kathy explained is a clear nod to the film.

She said there’s no direct link between the dress and Barbie’s history, but that signature colour will forever be linked with the youthful energy the character exudes.

However, there are still some dolls that may have inspired the red carpet look, including the more recent Barbie Pink and Fabulous Doll BFW19 which features a similar statement necklace and gown style.

As for Barbie herself, Margot Robbie opted for a more understated look at The Oscars as she wasn’t up for the Lead Actress award.

Kathy suggested that her dress was a way of her revisiting the 1960 Solo in the Spotlight doll.

Margot initially wore a replica of the dress during the movie’s Los Angeles premiere.

Wrapping up the award show season and saying goodbye to her Barbie era, Margot decided to revisit the look one more time, but with a modern twist.

Kathy noted that the dress was similar in colour and style to the 1960 doll, but without the old-fashioned ruffle at the bottom.

However, the A-lister also decided to mix things up with a show-stopping outfit change for the Vanity Fair Oscars party.

Swapping black for gold, Margot had all eyes on her in a striking corset and matching shawl.
