BBC radio presenter, Steve Wright’s last show is said to never be aired following his sudden death at age 69.

His family shared a heartfelt statement on February 13, stating: “It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright. In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard.”

They went on to add: “Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK’s most enduring and popular radio personalities. As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time.”

Whilst his final Sunday show on Radio 2 had been pre-recorded, a separate programme apparently won’t be aired.

A fellow BBC star reportedly remarked of his passing as ‘very, very sudden’. The star disclosed: “Steve had been talking to Radio 2 bosses just two or three days ago… we were aware he was struggling with his health a bit but nothing that seemed this serious.”

Steve, a BBC veteran of over 40 years, hosted his weekend mid-afternoon love song show from March 1996 until his passing. He ended his Valentine’s Day special with popular tunes like Islands In The Stream, Three Little Birds and Unchained Melody.

As he wrapped up the programme, he promised listeners he’d be “back for more love songs next Sunday” and said “ta-ra then” before ending the pre-recorded show with Delicate by Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree. Just two days later, it was announced that he had sadly passed away.

Former Radio 2 colleague Ken Bruce expressed his shock at the news, revealing that Steve and his friends were planning to celebrate his MBE with a lunch. “An outstanding and innovative broadcaster whose listeners loved him. What a loss to the world of radio,” he said.

Another Radio 2 star, Tony Blackburn, expressed his sadness, saying: “I am so sad that my dear friend Steve Wright has passed away. He was a great broadcaster and we just loved one another’s company. I was shocked at the news and will miss him terribly.”
