Angela Rippon has spoken out after a frightening health ordeal forced her to pull out of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour earlier this week. The 79-year-old took to Instagram on Saturday to inform her followers that a chest infection triggered a “serious” asthma attack which left her unable to breathe.
She told her 33.5k followers: “I’m afraid I’ve been off the grid for a few days because as some of you may know I suffered a major medical meltdown at the beginning of the week.
“When we were in Liverpool I managed to pick up an infection which went straight to my chest. It affected my breathing very badly and as some of you may know, I do suffer from asthma.
“On Wednesday evening when I was about to go on and dance the Cha Cha Cha, I’m afraid the infection triggered a serious asthma attack and when I started to dance, I stopped breathing basically which was all a bit scary, not just for me but for Kai as well.
“I was a bit like a rag doll on the dance floor, sorry Liverpool. I think Kai wasn’t really quite sure what was happening but fortunately, we always have paramedics in the arenas when we perform and when I came off, they gave me oxygen so I was able to breathe again and also make the trip to Leeds.”
Once she arrived in Leeds, a doctor informed her that the infection was “a lot worse” than she thought and she had to have two days of bed rest.
After resting and taking medication, Angela says she is feeling much better and will return to the dancefloor as the tour continues in Manchester on Saturday night.
Hundreds of people took to the comments to wish the presenter well. Strictly professional Lauren Oakley, who is currently on tour with Giovanni Pernice, wrote: “Glad you’re feeling better, lots of love.”
Strictly 2023 contestant Angela Scanlon, who was partnered with Carlos Gu, added: “Queen Ang. Back with a bang xx.”
Meanwhile, Joanna penned: “Oh my gosh phew!!! I am so happy you are okay and looking forward to seeing you again in London.”
Ellie echoed: “Oh my goodness that must have been so scary for you and Kai. Thank goodness you have paramedics with you at all times. So pleased to see you looking much better and ready to burn up the dancefloor. Have a wonderful day and take care.”
And Yvonne commented: “You are so incredible Angela. I’m sorry to hear you were so unwell because we could all see how much you were loving every minute of the tour.
“So glad you’ve been well cared for and it’s wonderful to see you looking and feeling better. You’re an inspiration.”
It comes after Angela revealed that she was planning her 80th birthday bash in Las Vegas later this year.
The former newsreader will mark the milestone in October with a “crazy” three-day trip with six of her friends.
She told Platinum Magazine: “I’m still thinking about how to celebrate my 80th this October. I had a big party when I was 60 and I said that would be the last of my parties. When I was 70 I took myself off alone to Oman and stayed in a beautiful hotel in Muscat.
“At my age, I should be allowed the latitude to do what I like and if I want to spend three crazy days in Las Vegas that’s what I’ll do.”
