BBC Strictly’s Anton Du Beke sparks backlash over ‘miserable’ Layton Williams verdict

Anton Du Beke stunned Strictly Come Dancing viewers this evening, as the usually generous judge was accused of being “overly critical” of Layton Williams’ Jive.

Layton and his professional dance partner Nikita Kuzmin performed a show-stopping routine to Shy FX and T-Power’s Shake Your Body.

Although the dance attracted top marks from Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse, Anton was less keen, giving the pair an eight, which was echoed by Craig Revel Horwood.

Anton began with a positive remark, telling Layton “it’s extraordinary what you do”.

However, he went on to add: “I am watching a Jive as well, so I have to watch the Jive part a lot more closely and your Jive kicks forward and backward were exceptional, the side ones were a bit loose.

“And towards the end, it got a little heavy, I thought, in the Jive kicks.”

Anton’s criticism was met with boos from the studio audience, to which he insisted he “had to be honest”.

One viewer fumed: “What’s up with Anton. He’s been marking people with 7,8s, and 9s for just showing up. All of a sudden he’s being overly critical?”

Another added: “is Anton okay? did he not get his special bean juice today? being a miserable b******#strictly.”

A third fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “I’m mad. Layton and Nikitas jive deserved a 40 – and an 8 from Anton and Criag?! Craig scored Angela’s Charleston higher last week? @LaytonWilliams you SLAYED! And what a bop too.”

A fourth viewer agreed: “Layton’s jive was fabulous. Such energy, attack and timing. Don’t know what Anton is going on about! #Strictly.”

However, other Strictly fans sided with Anton and Craig, praising them for being “picky” at the halfway point in the competition.

“Craig and Anton are 100% correct. There’s no doubt that Layton is an exceptional dancer, but what’s the point of the show if they aren’t marking the steps of the actual dance style. The whole point of strictly is your ability to do the actual dance style set #Strictly,” one BBC viewer tweeted.

Another praised: “Well done to Anton and Craig, Shirley and Motsi, obviously watching something else ! #Strictly.”

“Clearly Craig and Anton are the only people correctly critiquing dances, going by their Layton scoring,” a third tweet read.

Hitting out at the studio audience, a fourth viewer commented: “I always feel so annoyed when the judges are booed for giving constructive criticism.

“Craig and Anton weren’t being unreasonable, they said things that Layton needed to hear. Leave them be! #strictly.”
