Mastermind host Clive Myrie has branded the show’s viewers “fools” and said he has no compassion for the contestants on the BBC series. The 59-year-old took on hosting duties of the quiz show back in 2021 after former host John Humphrys stepped down after 18 years.

Clive hit out at the contestants who spend too long trying to figure out an answer, when they should move on to the next question. Speaking to Radio Times, he explained: “If you get it wrong, you must move on. If you go, ‘Um… um…’, that’s three, four seconds gone.

“People say, ‘You asked that person 16 questions and the other 14.’ Add up all the ums, you damn fool, and you’ll see what’s going on.” When asked if he has any compassion for the contestants, Clive told the publication: “I am a beast. But you know, all that adds to the pressure.

“This is an interrogation. That’s how the whole programme started – [series creator] Bill Wright was shot down and questioned by the Gestapo.”

Clive joined the BBC in 1987 as a trainee local radio reporter as part of a graduate journalism programme. After rising through the ranks, he is now considered one of the broadcaster’s chief news presenters and correspondents.

As well as hosting Mastermind, the journalist also hosts the celebrity edition of the quiz show too.

In November, Clive reassured his fans that he was safe after fans were concerned that he was still reporting on the devastating events in the Middle East.

He was reporting from Israel and Gaza at the time, with one fan being concerned about his safety and if he would still be attending a book festival.

They shared on X, formerly known as Twitter: “@CliveMyrieBBC we have reassured our worrying Mum that you are safe! Looking forward to taking her and her pal this evening to hear you.”

Clive kindly replied to the tweet: “Thank you Juliet. Regards to your mum.”

Clive was speaking to Radio Times.
