“The relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey,” Beyonce explained. “From spending my childhood in my mother’s salon to my father applying oil on my scalp to treat my psoriasis— these moments have been sacred to me.”

She went on, “The conversations and debates in the salons and barbershops create a sense of community for the people who look to it as a retreat from their everyday lives. For them, it’s a place to feel beautiful and vent, laugh, share secrets and pass down wisdom. It’s the most consistent community gathering we have. It’s so important that it’s a sanctuary.”

Beyonce explained the name choice for her new brand was intentional, as she wanted it to be a reflection of how sacred her hair was, especially in helping her bond with her parents.

“So I took the end of my name, Cé, and made it the beginning of the word sacred to create Cécred,” she explained. “From my mother’s salon, daily rituals with my father, and years of experience in developing a hair care line, the journey has been just that: Cécred.”

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that primarily affects the skin, causing it to develop red, scaly patches that can be itchy, painful, and sometimes even crack and bleed. These patches, known as plaques, often occur on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Apart from skin issues, psoriasis can also lead to other complications like psoriatic arthritis, which affects the joints and causes pain, stiffness, and swelling.

Treatment options for psoriasis vary depending on the severity of the condition, but they typically include topical treatments such as corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, and retinoids to reduce inflammation and slow down skin cell growth. Phototherapy, which involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light, can also help alleviate symptoms.

In more severe cases, oral medications or biologic drugs, which target specific parts of the immune system, may be prescribed to manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Though Beyonce was candid about her hair struggles in the Essence interview, one thing she refused to touch on was Jay-Z’s recent comments at the Grammys, when he slammed the awards show for never gracing Bey with Album of the Year, even though she’s the person who’s won the most Grammys in history. The pop star was reportedly embarrassed by her husband’s words, though she’s refused to directly comment on them.

Beyonce announced her hair care line last week; it’ll be available as of February 20.
