When David Letterman’s late-night talk show ended, he was a rich man who spent his fortune in fascinating ways. Arguably more important than that, Letterman had built up such an incredible legacy that loads of celebrities came forward to celebrate him.

On the other hand, there also were times when Letterman outraged his guests so much that they walked out. Amazingly enough, the music legend Cher had a relationship with Letterman which reached both of those extremes. After all, Cher once seemed to hate Letterman, and then she kissed him on camera on several occasions.

Cher Once Thought David Letterman Was A Jerk

By the time David Letterman ended his run as a late-night talk show host, he’d been a TV veteran for decades. As a result of Letterman’s many years of experience by that time, he was an expert in how to interview the top celebrities in the world. However, even at that stage in Letterman’s career, he still tended to occasionally say things that noticeably upset his guests.

Decades earlier, in the years after Letterman first began hosting, he had much more of a sharp edge to him. It was back then, when Letterman’s show had only been on the air for four years, that Cher made an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman in 1986.

Before Cher came out on Letterman’s stage in 1986, the host revealed how big of a deal she was for him. As Letterman explained directly to the camera, his team had repeatedly asked Cher to come on the talk show and had been rejected.

“We’ve wanted to have this woman on the show for four years. How many times did we ask her? How many separate communications have we launched from our office to her? At least 81. We’ve, we’ve asked her to be on the show 81 times and finally, apparently through a lapse of judgment. Anyway, she’s here tonight. And, of course, I’m talking about Cher.”

Cher and Meryl Streep turned out to be just as awesome in real life when they saved a woman on the street.

Since Letterman was always known for his sarcasm, some people may have assumed he was joking about how hard he tried to get Cher on the show. However, from the moment that Cher came out on the stage, it seemed like Letterman’s claims were true for a couple of reasons.

First off, before Cher and Letterman’s conversation even began, she echoed his claim that he had been trying to get her on the show for years. More importantly, the fact is that Cher seemed very standoffish towards Letterman. For example, Cher seemed dismissive of the host as she asked Letterman, “Is this as good as it gets” in the opening minutes of their interview.

Unfortunately for Letterman, things didn’t get much better for him after that question. In fact, Cher even repeatedly insisted that the only reason she agreed to go on the show finally was because his producers agreed to pay a substantial hotel bill.

After talking about why Cher finally agreed to go on Late Night with David Letterman, the host finally changed the subject. However, the new topic Letterman decided to tackle was related as he insisted on Cher explaining why she refused to be interviewed by him for so long.

Throughout Cher’s career, she has always come across as a very forthright person who is true to herself. As a result, it isn’t surprising that when pressed for an answer, Cher was willing to insult Letterman to his face.

When her explanation then got booed by Letterman’s studio audience, Cher seemed to revel in that response. Truly, everyone should try to avoid getting on Cher’s bad side.
