Conrad Bain was born to Jean and Stafford Bain on February 4, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He had an identical twin named Bonar, who became an actor as well. Bain studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts before joining the Canadian Army during WWII. Following the war, he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he graduated in 1948.

Professional Career in Television:

Bain first appeared on television in a 1952 episode of the anthology series “Studio One” and returned in 1956. Following a brief hiatus from television, he appeared as a guest star on several episodes in the 1960s, including “Naked City,” “The Defenders,” “Dark Shadows,” and “N.Y.P.D.” In 1972, Bain received his first major television role as Dr. Arthur Harmon on the CBS sitcom “Maude.”

He played the part till the show concluded in 1978. Following that, Bain began appearing on the sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes.” He played Phillip Drummond, a wealthy Manhattan businessman who adopts two black boys from Harlem, Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges, who were played by Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges. “Diff’rent Strokes” was a huge success, lasting eight seasons until 1986. During the show’s run, Bain appeared as Drummond in episodes of “Hello, Larry” and “The Facts of Life.” In 1981, he appeared in the television film “Child Bride of Short Creek.”

Following the conclusion of “Diff’rent Strokes,” Bain starred in the Fox sitcom “Mr. President,” which aired from 1987 to 1988. He played Charlie Ross, the chief of staff to George C. Scott’s fictional US president, Samuel Arthur Tresch. Carlin Glynn, Maddie Corman, Andre Gower, and Madeline Kahn were among the other cast members. After the show ended, Bain didn’t appear on television again until 1993, when he appeared as a guest on “The Adventures of the Black Stallion.” He made his final acting appearance three years later, repeating his role as Phillip Drummond in the series finale of the comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” In the finale, Bain appeared opposite Gary Coleman.

In 1971, Bain appeared in a number of films, including “Fury on Wheels,” “Bananas,” “The Anderson Tapes,” and “Who Killed Mary What’s ‘Er Name?” In addition, he played Richard Nixon in Woody Allen’s short mockumentary “Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story.” Bain appears in the 1972 issues of “A Fan’s Notes” and “Up the Sandbox.” He later appeared in the science-fiction family comedy “C.H.O.M.P.S.” later in the decade. Bain didn’t appear on the big screen again for a long time after that. In 1990, he made his final cinematic appearance as Grandpa in Mike Nichols’ “Postcards from the Edge.”
