Channel 5 newsreader Dan Walker has blasted the “cruel comments” he’s been hearing following Kate Middleton, the Princess of WLES’ video announcement this evening about her health battle. Taking to Twitter, he told more than 800,000 followers in no uncertain terms that he’s behind the Royal Family in their time of need – and that riches and privilege are no barrier when it comes to a medical emergency.

“Some of the cruel comments about the Princess of Wales and her family are hard to get your head around,” he wrote. “Think about William & their 3 young children… in 2022, they lost the Queen, the head of their family.”

Referencing a pattern of troubling news in recent months, the 47-year-old added: “This year, the King was diagnosed with cancer & now… the news about his wife & their mum. “Yes, they were born into a privileged family, but a crown doesn’t insulate you from the fear, pain & concern that comes with cancer,” he sympathised.

As the news broke this evening, he also tweeted that he hoped her new video announcement would put a stop to the online “conspiracy theories”. Kate announced that she is having “preventative chemotherapy” after successful surgery on her abdomen followed by news that cancer cells had been detected.

Dan had his own traumatic cancer scare himself back in 2012 when he was forced to stare death in the face. While covering the European Championships for the BBC on a work trip to Poland, he suddenly noticed a lump in his stomach and a change in his breathing and was immediately rushed to A&E.

A consultant feared he had a “tumour” on his kidney, but it fortunately proved to have been a false alarm as he was diagnosed with an infection instead.

Talking on White Wine Question Time, Dan explained: “There were a series of black shadows on my kidneys… they went down to about 30 per cent functionality, as I had this weird sort of virus that had really affected them.”

“They pumped eight litres of saline fluid into my body to try and get my kidney to start again,” he added, revealing that his head had also swollen up, to “twice its size”.

Today, Dan’s followers urged him to avoid the negativity by “unfollowing” anyone who had a bad word to say about Princess Kate, following he revelation.

Another fan responded: “Well said Dan, let’s hope people are more thoughtful now & sadly cancer doesn’t care who you are.”

A third chimed in: “Whilst dealing with cancer I wanted to hide away with close family and friends, [so] I can’t imagine dealing with gossip, conspiracy theories etc. My heart goes out to them all.”

“I feel so sad with this news. It’s just absolutely heartbreaking. I’m hoping that everything goes well from here and she makes a good recovery physically and mentally. It will be a huge toll mentally as well,” a fourth added.

The Princess of Wales says she is receiving treatment and is now fully focused on recovery, adding: “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able.”
