Why David Letterman Walked Off His Show After Eating Meat From Guest Bruce Willis’ Head

The story of David Letterman and Bruce Willis’ meat incident on The Late Show comes directly from Lady Gaga’s most famous stunt. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga won a slew of awards. That night, Gaga’s music videos won Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dance Music Video, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Choreography, and Best Editing.

Given how many awards Gaga’s music videos won, that should have gotten all the headlines. Instead, the main thing people talked about from that night was the raw meat dress that Gaga infamously wore.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Gaga explained the motivation for her meat dress. As Gaga revealed, the dress was meant to be part of her protests against the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” army policy that was very controversial.

“It’s certainly no disrespect to anyone that’s vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I’m the most judgment-free human being on the Earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening it’s [saying], ‘If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.’“

At this point in the interview, it may have seemed like there wasn’t much more to do. After all, how many raw meat jokes can anyone expect a movie star and a talk show host to make without the aid of a slew of writers?

As it turned out, however, Willis had something else in mind. After asking Letterman if he had eaten before filming the show, Willis pulled out salt and pepper shakers. Willis then proceeded to season the meat that was on his head before handing Letterman a fork and giving the host instructions.

“Dig in buddy. Carefully. Carefully. Oh yes. That’s it. That’s the good part right there.”

As Letterman held a fork full of raw beef that had been on Willis’s head, the host looked like he didn’t want anything to do with it. More notably, the groaning studio audience made it clear those in attendance couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

Always a good sport, Letterman eventually shoved the meat in his mouth and began chewing. After chewing for a moment, Letterman held up a finger and walked offstage where a camera caught him getting rid of the meat he chewed in a trash can.

When Letterman returned to the stage, he jokingly denied that he went backstage because of the meat.
