Most of Stephen’s jokes about Taylor were tame; he quipped that Taylor Swift tickets used to be expensive, but now it was becoming expensive to watch her watch something. Stephen also joked about the spike in sales of Kelce jerseys, as well as Taylor’s denim shorts selling out.
Now, Taylor Swift’s cousin gets all the credit for connecting Taylor and Travis, but at the time of Stephen’s initial joke, it was only speculation that Travis and Taylor were an item. Yet Stephen’s jokes also included the comment, “Really? She’s dating Travis Kelce? I think this is the one.”

Stephen concluded that particular monologue imploring Taylor to — if her relationship didn’t work out — “start dating one of our nation’s crumbling bridges” because “everything she touches is instantly revitalized.”
In another monologue, Stephen Colbert spoofed Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.” for President Biden’s pardoning of two Thanksgiving turkeys. In terms of Taylor jokes, the 2023 parody was probably the most palatable. After all, even Taylor Swift has spoofed Taylor Swift at times.
While Stephen’s claims of being a lifelong Swiftie could be called into question because of his jokes about the superstar’s relationships, Taylor herself may not have taken notice.

Though Stephen Colbert may not have thrilled viewers with his jokes at Taylor’s expense, it’s not clear whether Swift herself has a problem with the late night host’s humor. Taylor appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert one time, in 2021, before Stephen’s proclamation that he was forever a Swiftie.
In contrast, Taylor has appeared on other late-night TV shows multiple times; she sat down with David Letterman four times, chatted with James Corden twice, and went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! five times.
Fans Wonder If Travis Kelce Is Using Taylor Swift After He Jokes About Her Fame
Travis is financially benefiting from the relationship, so he may be dating Taylor for the wrong reasons.
That said, Taylor has been busy since 2023 after embarking on her Eras tour; less than halfway through, the Eras tour had already broken multiple records. Not only that, but Taylor had some relationship highs and lows during that period, and after splitting from Joe Alwyn, she hasn’t said much about her relationships (not that she needs to, at this point, thanks to the publicity).
Like everyone else, Stephen Colbert reported on the big headline that Taylor was connected to Travis Kelce, and while his jokes may have been a tad obnoxious, Stephen didn’t drag Taylor the way that other outlets have.
Besides, Stephen could be correct that Travis Kelce is “the one” — fans have already noticed how different Travis and Taylor’s relationship is from any previous relationships. Maybe Colbert was only wishing Taylor well, rather than dragging her dating history.
