Escape To The Chateau’s Dick Strawbridge says that the idea of “happy wife, happy life” is “over-rated” – and he’s convinced that he should argue with wife Angel as much as he wants. The pair have an 18-year age gap and when Dick first met Angel, he was already in his 50s, which he thinks qualifies him to be “cantankerous”.
“I have almost got to that age where I can be as naughty and cantankerous as I want because I’m going to die first!” he joked. “Happy wife, happy life is just so over-rated. we argue all the time and we tend to keep arguing!”
In fact, even the pair’s kids have noticed, with daughter Dorothy chiming in on a discussion about spooky sounds in the middle of the night. Talking on the podcast Dick and Angel’s Chat…Eau, Angel recalled how during a Q&A session, she was asked by an enthralled fan whether their opulent 45-room chateau might be haunted.
Angel doesn’t believe that it is, but acknowledged that she sometimes hears unusual sounds in the middle of the night. The 45-year-old recalled laughingly: “[My daughter] Dorothy shouts out ‘That’s mum and dad having passionate discussions!’”
Meanwhile, although stormy rows are commonplace and healthy in Dick’s eyes, Angel has contradicted: “You could have said it in one line: just agree with your wife!” The pair shared other tips for a successful relationship during the course of the podcast too.
While it might seem as if living in a remote fairytale chateau was in itself the ultimate romantic experience, Angel has admitted life can get stressful with children.
The pair share a ten-year-old son, Arthur, and an eight-year-old daughter, Dorothy – and “carving out time” for husband and wife alone time is crucial.
Angel explained that celebrating their anniversary as a twosome in November reminds them that “before children, there was us.”
Meanwhile, Dick – who says that the festive season is his favourite time of year – has admitted that he also loves to be “family-orientated” at Christmas.
In his eyes, it’s the best time of year, and one he’s enjoyed and favoured since his earliest days of childhood.
Meanwhile, Angel has revealed that she gets on well with her husband’s two children from a previous relationship, who are both in their 30s.
His son James is a 39-year-old celebrity chef, while his sister Charlotte, 37, is a singer – and Angel loves her step-kids “to bits”.
