Even though Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup had seven kids together, the former couple never got married. After many years together, Brentrup and Kit Culkin separated in 1995. While the pair never got divorced, they did engage in a protracted legal battle over the custody of their children.

That quote from the source is somewhat fascinating because of the idea that Kit Culkin may have expected a health scare to bring his kids back into his life. After all, it seems all but certain that Kit Culkin hasn’t had anything to do with his kids since he got separated from their mother.
Assuming that is the case, as it extremely likely is, Kit Culkin wasn’t there for his kids as they suffered a tragedy. In 2008, Dakota “Cody” Culkin lost her life suddenly after being struck by a car. From all indications, it seems like Kit Culkin wasn’t there for his surviving children as they coped with something Kieran Culkin said left them “torn up inside”.

“[He said] ‘Do good or I’ll hit you.’ He was a bad man. He was abusive, physically and mentally — I can show you all my scars if I wanted to.”
Also during the same interview, Macaulay Culkin stated his belief that Kit Culkin was jealous of the Home Alone star. “Everything he tried to do in life, I excelled at before I was 10 years old.”
