Over the last several years, it has become common for politics to cause a lot of anger. A couple of perfect examples of that are they way people judge Donald Trump’s relationships and Joe Biden struggles to get along with journalists.

Since successful talk show hosts tend to become rich, John Oliver and his peers clearly are lucky to have their jobs. However, given the overtly political nature of Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, it is no secret that his show makes some viewers very angry. Since it seems like Oliver has different political views from his longtime wife, it is interesting to know if they get along well.

Why John Oliver Is Very Different Than His Wife Kate Norley

In the year 2006, John Oliver made his debut on The Daily Show where he would go on to work for years. On top of his work on Jon Stewart’s former show, Oliver has also hosted several seasons of the HBO show Last Week Tonight since it debuted in 2014.

If there is one thing that Oliver’s The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight tenures have made clear, it is that his politics tend to be left-wing. With that in mind, it is amazing to know that it has widely been reported that Oliver’s wife is a Republican.

According to Whos Dated Who, Oliver and his wife Kate Norley became a couple since 2008. The couple then got engaged in 2010, they walked down the aisle the following year, and they have been together ever since.

According to The Daily Beast, Oliver got himself in trouble at the RNC and was looking for somewhere to hide from security. In an adorable twist of fate, one of the people who helped Oliver in his moment of need was his future wife.

“Attempting to avoid arrest and subsequent Breturn, the reporter and his camera crew happened upon a group of veterans who offered to help them hide. In a meet-cute befitting a beloved political satirist, one of those veterans was Oliver’s future wife—U.S. Army combat medic Kate Norley.”

The reason that amazing meet cute could happen for Oliver and Norley was the comedian’s wife was there as a part of the group Vets for Freedom. As The Daily Beast described, the group Norley was a part of had dueling missions.

First off, it was a part of Vets for Freedom’s mission to advocate for the War on Terror. Secondly, Vets for Freedom worked to help Republican politicians gain more power according to The Daily Beast.

Given Norley’s work with Vets for Freedom and the statements Oliver makes in public, they appear to have very different political opinions. With that in mind, it makes sense that observers wonder if Oliver and Norley fight all the time or get along well.

That said, from the outside looking in, all the available information makes it seem like Oliver has a huge amount of admiration for his longtime wife. Given what Norley has done with her life, that makes a lot of sense.

According to The Daily Beast, Norley was deeply affected by what she saw on September 11th, 2001. As a result, Norley decided to enlist in the army when she was nineteen years old, and she served her country in Iraq.

While Norley was serving in Iraq, she spent her time helping her peers come out the other side of their service. Norley took care of her fellow soldiers in two ways that really would have made a difference for the people around her.

First off, Norley served as a combat medic who won a medal for helping her soldiers who were under fire. Secondly, Norley was a mental health specialist who provided emotional support for soldiers.

During interviews, Oliver has made fun of himself on many occasions while comparing his life to what his wife has done. “It’s the most emasculating thing I could possibly do to go out with someone who has actually done something valuable with their life.”

Oliver has also made it clear that the admiration he has for his wife affects the way he looks at his own life. “I can’t come home and say I had a really tough day at work today and see her roll her eyes and go, ‘Really?’”

Oliver continued, “And she would be like, ‘I can’t imagine how difficult it was for you. You clown!’ Rightly, I have no place to whine about anything. That’s the problem with living with someone who has fought a war. You lose the moral high ground.”

At the end of the day, Oliver never seems to ignore an opportunity to lavish praise on his wife. A perfect example of that is when Oliver spoke about how much he looks up to his wife during a 2014 David Letterman interview.

“She is awesome. She has married down in an almost bend-inducing manner. I was half expecting a nosebleed during our, as we were exchanging vows.”

Based on reports, it seems very likely that Oliver and Norley don’t see eye to eye on things politically at least some of the time. That said, based on Oliver’s admiration for Norley and the fact that they’ve been together for roughly fifteen years, there is almost no chance they fight all the time.
