Elizabeth Taylor was one of the brightest stars of the Classic Hollywood era. Stunningly beautiful and elegant at a young age, Taylor touched the hearts of her audience and became a box office draw in the 1950s and 1960s. Her level of fame has often been compared to that of Marilyn Monroe. At the peak of her career, she even played one of the most famous queens in history, Cleopatra.

Taylor’s personal life was just as publicized as her career. Throughout her life, Taylor was married to seven different men. Some of her husbands were famous in their own right, while others were not. While Taylor was involved in numerous marriages, she remained in love with one of her ex-husbands for the remainder of her life.

Beyond her early marriages, Taylor dated numerous men, but never married them. Taylor’s most famous love story, however, was with actor Richard Burton. They first became acquainted at a party in the 1950s, but eventually began to have feelings for each other during the filming of Cleopatra, according to Biography. Taylor herself spoke on her feelings towards the actor:

“When I saw him on the set of Cleopatra, I fell in love and I have loved him every since.”

They pursued a romantic relationship during Cleopatra’s production, even though they were both already married to other individuals. According to Taylor in an interview, she and Burton did try to “resist.” She elaborated by sharing, “my marriage with Eddie was over, but we didn’t want to do anything to hurt Sybil [Burton’s wife at the time].”

Taylor and Burton’s romance ultimately prevailed, however. Despite a passionate love for each other, their relationship was far from perfect. They often got into argumentative and even physical fights with each other. While filming Cleopatra, Taylor got physically injured by Burton. Both Burton and Taylor abused substances, including alcohol, and this had an impact on their relationship as well. Their relationship even started a Vatican controversy. Despite such overwhelming obstacles, Taylor and Burton remained in love and eventually married in 1964. During their marriage, Taylor and Burton became a Hollywood power couple. Not only did they star in multiple films together, but they enjoyed the fruits of their labor together. At one point, they even owned a luxury yacht and private plane, according to Biography.

Though they enjoyed great success professionally, they continued to argue and rely on substances throughout their tense marriage. In 1974, it proved to be too much and they divorced. This is not where the story ends, however. Even after their divorce, Burton and Taylor still had unwavering feelings for each other. In 1975, they decided to give marriage one more try and re-married. It was, unfortunately, short lasting. Taylor explained her relationship with Burton in more detail in an interview: “We had a good marriage. Something went wrong, but we’re still good friends.”
