*NSYNC’s reunion at the 2023 VMAs was such a dream come true for many millennials. Now, they’re expecting the group to go on tour. But nothing has been confirmed about that so far.
Many fans are even attacking Justin Timberlake for suddenly “using” the ’90s boy band to launch his own comeback. Other members previously confessed that he made the decision not to reunite throughout the years following their breakup in 2002.
Recently, Joey Fatone set the record straight on their plans as a group — from the rumored tour to making new music together. Here’s everything you should know about *NSYNC’s renaissance.
Why Justin Timberlake Didn’t Want An *NSYNC Reunion
Days after Timberlake’s wedding to Jessica Biel in October 2012, his former bandmate Chris Kirkpatrick confirmed that none of the *NSYNC members was invited to the Friends with Benefits star’s nuptials. “He didn’t want the wedding to be an *NSYNC reunion, and I totally understand that,” Kirkpatrick told People magazine, per MTV.
“I already had plans to be in Italy anyway. It was just a coincidence that I was there when Justin got married. There’s really nothing negative about any of it,” he said of why he was present at the ceremony. Kirkpatrick also proposed to his wife Karly Skladany in Italy back then.
“We had a hotel room at the Isle of Capri, overlooking the Mediterranean,” he shared. “It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. And it hit me: I wanted to propose to Karly. So I ran to a jewelry store, found the perfect ring and bought it.” The two got married in 2013.
That same year, Kirkpatrick, Fatone, Lance Bass, and JC Chasez admitted to Huffpost that Timberlake made the final decision on not doing a reunion. Six years later, Fatone squashed the rumors that they weren’t on good terms with the solo music artist. “He was still doing his tour, he had just finished his tour,” he told TMZ about Timberlake not making it to the band’s performance at Coachella with Ariana Grande that year.
“So, he wasn’t able to come back and do rehearsals with us,” he added. “No, he wasn’t [able to fit it in], man. Think about it, you’ve been doing a long tour, would you want to do something after that?” During the lockdowns, Bass also confirmed that the group was still in touch online.
“Especially during this quarantine, your relationships, they get tighter. Now we have happy hours every week together on Zoom, which is really fun,” he said back then. When asked if they were also Zooming with the SexyBack hitmaker, Bass said “of course.”
Justin Timberlake Is Going On Tour
On September 16, 2023, days after *NSYNC’s reunion at the VMAs to present Taylor Swift with Best Pop award, Page Six published the headline, “Sorry, *NSYNC isn’t going on tour — but Justin Timberlake is.” In the article, an industry insider told the outlet that “Justin is coming out with a new album, so he’s planning a big US tour for 2024.”
Fans were quick to slam the singer-turned-actor for “using” the boy band’s reunion to launch his solo comeback. “How come nobody is bringing up how Justin Timberlake was VEHEMENTLY against doing an NSYNC reunion until the public turned against him recently?” one wrote on Twitter. “I love NSYNC but he isn’t fooling me using this to get back in good graces. It’s painfully obvious (TO ME).”
NSYNC Is Releasing New Music
The day after Page Six‘s report, Fatone appeared at the ’90s Con Florida where he confirmed that *NSYNC hasn’t made concrete tour plans but that fans might change that. “We’re excited for *NSYNC to come out with a song,” he said during the panel discussion. “Which is crazy to say after 25 years. And no, I don’t know if there is a tour!”
“If the fans want it that much, yell at the record company, yell at Sony, yell at RCA, yell at them to say that they need an *NSYNC album,” he continued, noting that Timberlake has a solo album coming out. “Obviously Justin’s coming out with his album, so he’s probably going to be doing a tour, I’m sure he’s doing that. Then hopefully, cross our fingers — I can’t promise — but hopefully we do something together.”
A week before that, Timberlake posted a behind the scenes Instagram video of him and the band working on a track for Trolls Band Together. “When the stars align… got my brothers back together in the studio to work on something fun and the energy was special. Better Place is coming 9/29 🙏🏻 LOVE Y’ALL,” he wrote in the caption.
A Twitter critic then alleged that “the *NSYNC reunion rumors are insincere and just justin timberlake using PR to get around the SAG/WGA strike rules around movie promo to promote the new stupid trolls movie and oh god that’s probably right.” The third Trolls movie, which stars Timberlake as the voice of Branch, is set to come out on November 17, 2023.
