Fans Are Concerned For Dakota Johnson After She Fired Her Team Following Madame Web

Highlights

  • Dakota Johnson left WME right after a disastrous response to the Madame Web trailer.
  • Madame Web is bombing commercially and critically, making it another Sony disappointment.
  • Johnson’s unimpressed reaction and disappointing box office sales prove this film is a wreck.

Marvel has been in a slump since Avengers: Endgame capped of what was more than a decade of films. That project was everything that Marvel was hoping it would be, but since then, both Disney and Sony’s Marvel pictures have been spotty offerings that have all but destroyed the goodwill that it had earned after so many successful blockbusters.

Dakota Johnson’sMadame Web is Sony’s latest offering, and things have been horrendous for the film since its debut trailer dropped. In fact, the film might be responsible for Johnson leaving her former agency.

Let’s take a look at what happened, and how the film has been a massive bomb.

Dakota Johnson Ditched Her Former Agency After The Fallout From Madame Web

If only Dakota Johnson had the same type of foresight as Madame Web.

In a surprising turn of events, Dakota Johnson decided to part ways with her talent agency, WME, shortly after the release of the first trailer for Madame Web. The move has left fans and industry insiders alike speculating about the reasons behind Johnson’s decision and the implications for her career.

According to a report by Deadline, Johnson has signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), marking a significant shift in her professional representation. This move comes after her association with WME, which had been handling her career.

The decision to change agencies, especially after the release of a highly-anticipated trailer, has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation within the industry. The timing has led to conjecture about a possible connection between the two events.

Madame Web, a film within the Sony Spider-Man universe, featured Dakota Johnson as the titular character. The trailer, however, has received a less than favorable response from both fans and critics. Some people were saying that the film looked like a CW product, which is as sad as it is hilarious.

Comic Book Movie reported on the awful trailer and how fan reaction could have pushed Johnson away from WME. It’s speculative, of course, but Johnson’s timing is curious, if nothing else.

The site also highlighted an excerpt from Variety, which said, “Johnson’s conspicuous jump from WME to CAA in November – just days after a baffling first trailer debuted – raised industry eyebrows, along with a razz in her recent ‘SNL’ monologue describing the film as ‘like if AI generated your boyfriend’s perfect movie.’”

Ouch.

To further complicate things, Johnson didn’t even seem to give the project a positive endorsement, and the overall marketing for the film was baffling to longtime movie fans. It’s as if Sony did everything in their power to get people to not see this movie.

Turns out, this tactic is no way to market a movie, and just days into its release, Madame Web is being blasted to bits by fans and critics alike.

The Things

So far, Madame Web is nothing short of a disaster for Sony. We’re talking Morbius levels of bad.

At the time of this writing, the film has a 13% with critics, and a 56% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Joe Friar from Fort Worth Report held nothing back in an excerpt of his review.

“The story is filled with ridiculous dialogue. Johnson delivers an uninspired performance, Rahim’s badly dubbed lines are recited in an annoying low gravel, and it’s 2 hours of setup followed by the credits,” he wrote.

To make matters worse, Madame Web is doing poorly at the box office.

“Sony’s newest Spider-Man spin-off, Madame Web, is in theaters now, and it’s off to a slow start. The movie released on February 14 in the US, earning $6 million for its first day and $2.2 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $8.2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter,” GameSpot reports.

The site also noted that “Madame Web is projected to earn between $25 million and $27 million over the six-day period covering February 14-19 for the Valentine’s Day to Presidents Day long weekend. It’s likely to finish second to One Love, which is expected to make between $30 million and $35 million for the six-day period in the US.”

All-in-all, its first weekend tally wasn’t great.

Variety noted that it made “$17.6 million over the traditional weekend and $25.8 million during the same six-day period. The film launched internationally with $25.7 million from 61 markets
