Highlights

  • Nicki Minaj has a younger sister named Ming Maraj, but very little is known about her, leaving fans confused.
  • Ming Maraj wants to focus on her career and doesn’t want to be involved in any feuds between Nicki and other artists.
  • There is speculation of a rift between Nicki and Ming, as Nicki hasn’t been supporting Ming’s music career, unlike other artists she has helped.

Nicki Minaj has been called the Queen of Hip Hop, and for a good reason. She might not always be in the spotlight for the most positive reasons, though. Although she is very open when talking about her marriage to Kenneth Petty and their child, the rapper doesn’t speak much about her family.

From the little tidbits of information fans had access to, it could have been assumed that Nicki and her younger sister, Ming Maraj were very close. Nicki wished her half-sister a happy birthday in 2021 via social media. There were no ill words spoken about one another. And given the criminal issues some of Nicki’s family had over the years, fans loved seeing the two women being so close.

However, fans did not know much about Ming at that time. To this day, they still do not, with some being shocked that Nicki even has a younger sister, not to mention just how similar the two look. As such, fans are a bit confused about who Nicki Minaj’s sister is, and want to know why so little is known about her.

On June 16, 2013, the singer shared a pic of her sister on Twitter with the hashtag ‘#Sister love u.’ So naturally, fans felt curious about the cute little girl in the picture.

That same day Nicki tweeted, “Not everything needs to be explained. Love.”

Ming is 18 years old now and has over 122,000 followers on Instagram. Just like her sister, Ming also likes rapping and singing. As proof of it, she uploaded on her YouTube channel a cover of Hallelujah. Although her sister is a superstar, Ming is also a devoted fan of Billie Eilish.

Fans have been confused about the relationship between Nicki and Ming as of late. This is because while the two seemed so close just a few years ago, there now appears to be a rift in the relationship.

Nicki’s fans took to social media to ask Ming’s opinion about the feud between Nicki and Megan Thee Stallion. Something that Ming wanted nothing to do with.

“Whatever beef that’s really going on I really don’t give a… for it,” Ming explained. “Like that got nothing to do with me.”

Ming went on to say, “I’m working on my life, I’m working on my mine, my grind,” she said. “But yeah. Right like dang. But I don’t really care about that… It ain’t helping me with what I need to do with my life.”

Ming also told followers that she was not doing well financially. Ming said that she was waiting to get a new iPhone so that she could get her new YouTube page up and running. As such, any support that fans could give her new music was much appreciated.

This left fans confused about why Nicki was not helping Ming with her music career. Given that Nicki had invested in IJ and Ice Spice’s career, it would seem natural to help her younger sister as well. Fans have speculated that there must have been a falling out for Nicki to allow Ming to be struggling so much and have called on Nicki to help Ming. However, those requests from fans have, so far, gone unanswered.

Nicki’s oldest brother, Jelani, is currently in prison. This happened as a result of the abuse of a minor during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jelani was sentenced to 25 years to life, but just how long Jelani will remain behind bars is unclear.

The hope that Nicki’s parents had with moving to the United States years ago was to give their kids a better life than they had. As such, Nicki’s mother enrolled at Monroe College and her father got a job at American Express. It was during this time that Nicki and her siblings would stay with their grandmother.

Living with her grandmother meant that Nicki spent some of her youth in the Port of Spain. During this time, the culture influenced a young Nicki. Although her parents had steady work, money was still tight. As such, once the family finally made their way to the US permanently, they decided to live in South Jamaica in Queens, New York.

Nicki and her older brother would start calling Queens “home” when she was just five years old, but unfortunately, things would go from bad to worse for the future star.

Nicki and Ming’s father struggled with drug addiction. To fuel his addiction, he would sell some of the family’s items, including furniture.

While Nicki’s mother worked as a nurse’s aide, it was tough for the family to have a stable income living with someone who had substance abuse issues.

As Robert’s addiction got worse, he started being abusive towards Nicki’s mother and even once tried to burn her house down. Thankfully, Nicki’s mother had a premonition about this happening and sent Nicki and her siblings to stay at a friend’s house to remain unharmed.

In an interview, Nicki revealed, “I was so scared, I didn’t know what happened, but everybody was running over here, and I just looked … My house was gone. All my toys, all my clothes, all of my memories.”

With Robert’s addiction and abuse, Nicki, her siblings, and her mother would live in fear. There were holes constantly being punched in walls, and police making regular appearances, which led to Nicki locking herself in her room regularly.

As a way of coping with a traumatic situation, Nicki would express herself artistically, pretending to be other people.

Before Nicki was Barbie, she was known as Cookie.

“To get away from all their fighting, I would imagine being a new person. ‘Cookie’ was my first identity – that stayed with me for a while,’” Nicki explained. “‘I went on to Harajuku Barbie, then Nicki Minaj. Fantasy was my reality. I must have been such a f***ing annoying little girl. Everywhere we went, I was singing or acting, like ‘Hey, look at me!’”

Eventually, Nicki’s father would get clean, and the family moved toward a healthier relationship. One that took time and did not happen overnight.
