Florence Pugh’s Small Dune: Part 2 Role Confused Fans Who Felt They Were Promised More

Highlights

  • Florence Pugh’s supporting role in Dune: Part 2 left some fans disappointed.
  • Pugh’s raw talent shines in an intense filming environment alongside Timothée Chalamet.
  • Director Denis Villeneuve confirmed plans to develop Pugh’s character into a prominent figure in potential Dune: Messiah, exciting fans.

Florence Pugh‘s bold personality and raw talent make her a welcome presence in any movie, but her casting in Dune: Part 2 was particularly thrilling. As soon as her casting was announced, fans were excited to see Pugh play Princess Irulan Corrino. Dune: Part 2’s actors have shared quite a lot about working on the film, from Tim Blake keeping his deleted character a secret to Austin Butler talking about the tough filming environment. While it sounds like it was an intense shoot, it was also a satisfying and enjoyable one. Timothée Chalamet and Pugh had a lot of fun on set.

However, as ScreenRant pointed out, fans assumed that Florence Pugh’s Dune: Part 2 role would be larger than it is. This is because, according to ScreenRant, Princess Irulan is central to the second novel in the series by Frank Herbert, “Dune Messiah.” In this article, we’ll take a look at what Florence Pugh said about her Dune: Part 2 character in interviews, along with what her role could be like in the third movie.

Florence Pugh Said She Played A “Supporting Role” In Dune: Part 2

In interviews about the highly-anticipated sci-fi movie, Florence Pugh never said that her Dune: Part 2 role was big. In a 2024 interview with Collider, Pugh said she played a “supporting role.”

When asked if there were any moments that she was upset didn’t make it into the final movie, Pugh said:

“I was in it so sparingly I don’t think they could cut me out.”

Pugh continued to Collider:

“That’s the best thing about playing a supporting role. You’re like, ‘I’ve really got to ace this scene because otherwise they’re just gonna snip me out’… there was no space for any of the fat.

What we shot was what we shot, and there was nothing to get rid of.”

The first film hinged on landing Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides.

However, it should be noted that Florence Pugh only shared details of her Dune: Part 2 role once it was already in movie theaters. Before the film was released, she made it clear that she couldn’t say much. Of course, this makes sense considering the hype surrounding the sequel.

In a 2023 interview with Collider, the actress said:

“I can’t tease anything other than the fact that I feel very lucky to be a part of that cast. When I started meeting everyone I was just taking everybody’s faces in and going, ‘Oh my God, I’m doing it. I’m here,’ and I have no idea what it’s like. I have no idea how the rest of the shoot went. I’m just so thrilled to be a part of it, and that’s unfortunately all I can give you.”

Many Dune fans were shocked that Florence Pugh doesn’t appear much in Dune: Part 2 since everyone thought that she had a main role. When Variety reported on Pugh’s potential Dune casting in March 2022, they mentioned Princess Irulan’s crucial storyline in the book series. Irulan’s Dune: Part 2 screentime was much less than anticipated.

According to CNBC, Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment, said, “I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not.”
