Friends Star Matthew Perry Dead at 54 In Suspected Drowning

Friends star Matthew Perry has died at the age of 54. Perry was found in the jacuzzi located at his Los Angeles home.

According to TMZ, first responders rushed to Perry’s home after receiving a call about a potential cardiac arrest. TMZ reports that no drugs were found at the scene of Matthew Perry’s death and noted that the actor was unresponsive when first responders arrived. In Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, published in 2022, Perry was very candid about his previous alcohol and drug addiction and his attempts to get sober in recent years.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Perry was found at approximately 4 P.M. The publication notes that no foul play is suspected, however, the Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery-homicide detectives are investigating the situation.

Perry had previously had a serious brush with death related to his opioid addiction. In his memoir, Perry opened up about a near-death experience he faced at 49 years old. Perry had suffered a gastrointestinal perforation after his colon burst due to his opioid use and he spent two weeks in a coma and five months in the hospital following that emergency.

Perry starred on Friends for 10 seasons. The sitcom about six single New Yorkers looking for love and success in New York City debuted in 2014. The show, starring Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer, became one of the most successful TV shows of all time. The Friends series finale was viewed by 52.5 million people making it the sixth most viewed finale in TV history.

Following the Friends finale, Perry went on to star in a string of movies, including The Whole Nine Yards, Fools Rush In, and Serving Sara, among others. Perry eventually returned to the small screen for the critically acclaimed but short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He also played Oscar Madison in the reboot of The Odd Couple and starred as Ben Donovon in a single season of Mr. Sunshine. Perry also appeared in 22 episodes of Go On from 2012-2013.

Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on August 19, 1969, and raised in Ottawa, Canada. His mother, Suzanne Morrison, was press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin Trudeau’s father. Perry’s stepfather was Dateline’s Keith Morrison and Perry’s biological father, John Bennett Perry, was also an actor, in fact, Perry appeared in 1979 on his dad’s TV series, 240-Robert.
