Golden Globes host called out by Piers Morgan after ‘awful’ Taylor Swift joke

Piers Morgan has slammed Golden Globes host Jo Koy, who was chosen as the last-minute presenter for the prestigious awards. The annual event was held last night in Los Angeles and the comedian has been blasted online for his “awful” jokes.

Koy landed the gig only 10 days before the awards, but sadly viewers including Piers Morgan didn’t quite buy into his puns throughout the evening. So much so, Piers called him out over taking a jab at singer Taylor Swift.

Taylor, 34, whose concert film The Eras Tour movie was nominated in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, was sitting in the audience when Koy made a joke about her new romance with NFL player Travis Kelce.

He said: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL – on the Gold Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” with Taylor failing to crack a smile and instead drinking her champagne awkwardly.

Piers Morgan slammed the comedian who said on X: “If Taylor Swift death stares could actually kill, Jo Koy would now be deceased.” He also tweeted: “I don’t know what the hell I’m watching but can someone get @rickygervais to the #GoldenGlobes as fast as humanly possible.”

British comedian Ricky Gervais has previously hosted the Golden Globes five times, with his last appearance being in 2020. However, he was known for his controversial edge and brutal monologues which gained him widespread praise.

Meanwhile, Koy sparked backlash online with numerous Golden Globe fans, who labelled him “the worst host in award show history”. One fan typed: “I mean, it’s not a great joke, but Gervais would have made it one.”

A second penned: “He needed to deliver with conviction and not half a** it while apologizing before he finished the joke. @rickygervais would have killed it.” A third said: “#JoKoy should never ever ever approach comedy.”

However, many jumped to Koy’s defence and said that Taylor should have seen the funny side. One viewer tweeted: “Why didn’t she just laugh? It was harmless. And true. Thus far this guy is not that funny — at least the parts that I’ve seen.”

Another commented: “Not sure what’s the problem with what he said, it’s a good joke!” whilst another chimed in: “Just shake it off, Taylor.” A fourth penned: “She needs a sense of humour.”

The night saw big blockbuster Oppenheimer triumph at the Golden Globes, picking up five awards such as Best Director (Nolan), Best Male Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Drama. It also won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert Downey Jr).

Meanwhile, the biggest snub of the night was the lack of a single award for the low-budget romance film, Past Lives. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film won Best Original Song and the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.
