Graham Norton issued an emotional goodbye message to his Virgin Radio listeners during his final show this morning (February 25). The farewell comes after the Irish broadcaster announced his shock exit from the weekend show earlier this weekend.

The 60-year-old has hosted the Graham Norton Radio Show every Saturday and Sunday since leaving BBC Radio 2 back in 2021. However, a new face is officially set to take over the 9.30am-12.30pm slot.

Ahead of his final broadcast, Graham took to social media to upload a selfie from the Virgin Radio studio. In the caption of the post, he wrote to his 666,000 Instagram followers: “Here we go! One last spin!! Thanks to everyone @virginradiouk and everyone who has listened along the way!!!”

He added that there were “three hours to go” at the time and that he must control himself to “not swear” on air. Since sharing, fans have come out in their droves to wish the star good luck in his future endeavours.

One Instagram user wrote: “Weekends won’t be the same without you & Maria”. Another said: “Ah Graham my weekends simply won’t be the same but I do understand that you want your weekends back. Will really miss your show. Have fun in the future.”

The official Instagram account for Richard ‘Dick’ McCourt and Dominic ‘Dom’ Wood commented: “So sad. You have sat in my kitchen talking to me for 13 years at the weekend. Enjoy the rest.”

“Ooh, so sad,” typed a fourth user. “My husband & I will miss your dulcit (sic) tones & cheeky humour at the weekend. You’ve made our weekends enjoyable so now go enjoy your own!”

Earlier this weekend, Graham took to the Virgin Radio airwaves to announce his sudden departure with immediate effect.

He told listeners: “It is my final weekend of shows here at Virgin Radio.”

The former BBC Radio 2 host announced that he would be vacating the weekend slot for good and did not mention what his departure means for co-host Maria McErlane.

Recent Strictly Come Dancing contestant Angela Scanlon is due to temporarily take over Graham’s weekend show. The 40-year-old will front the show for the “next few weeks” before a permanent host is put in place.

Graham has previously discussed the idea of cutting back his workload as he gets older.

Back in 2019, he told American radio station SiriusXM: “We are on air right now 35 to 36 weeks a year. So if I cut that down, maybe lob 10 weeks off it, then I think that would be ideal.”
