Gwyneth Paltrow has amassed an incredible $200 million net worth thank to her acting career and business empire, but it appears the Goop founder is thinking of retirement as she hopes to step away from the spotlight.
Speaking to Bustle in an interview published on Wednesday, October 18, Gwyneth said she’ll likely one day sell her lifestyle brand and resort to living the rest of her life in private.
“I will literally disappear from public life,” Gwyneth, 51, predicted. “No one will ever see me again.”
Gwyneth said the time isn’t now to sell her brand, as she still enjoys “creating, collaborating, being struck with new ideas, innovating, thinking ahead, strategy, vision, that kind of thing.” But one day, she thinks she’ll want to lead a more low-key life.
Gwyneth Paltrow Retired From Acting In 2020
This is the first time Gwyneth has expressed a desire to step away from Goop, but the celebrity has already put her acting career on the backburner. In 2020, the businesswoman announced she was retiring from acting and had no plans to take on future projects.
“I think that when you hit the bullseye, when you’re 26 years old and you’re a metrics driven person who, frankly, doesn’t love acting that much as it turns out,” she said on SiriusXM’s podcast Quarantined with Bruce Tuesday at the time.
“I sort of felt like, well, now who am I supposed to be? Like, what am I, what am I driving towards?” the Iron Man star went on.
“Part of the shine of acting wore off, you know, being in such intense public scrutiny, being a kid who’s like living every breakup on every headline, like being criticized for everything you do, say and wear,” Gwyneth continued.
Even then, the actress alluded to a desire to lead a more low-key live out of the public’s eye, saying, “Like I’m such a homebody, you know, me, I like to be with my old friends and cook and squeeze my kids. Like I don’t want to be alone in a hotel room in Budapest for six weeks. Like, it’s just not who I am.”
Gwyneth’s Goop Has Been Criticized For Questionable Practices
However, part of Gwyneth’s desires to eventually part ways with her famous brand Goop could be motivated by the controversy surrounding the wellness brand. It’s not only been criticized for being over-priced and out-o-touch with everyday consumers, but Goop has also received backlash for promoting dangerous products that aren’t always scientifically backed.
Some of Goop’s most infamous moments include the release of a Jade Egg, meant to be inserted inside a woman to increase sexual energy, though unproven. Goop’s health conference was also slammed in 2019 for being overpriced yet subjecting guests to subpar standard, with some critics even calling it a scam.
While Gwyneth claims that she’s staying with Goop now, perhaps her days leading the company are coming to an end.
