Hannah Waddingham has revealed her drama teacher once cruelly claimed she “would never work on screen because of her looks”. The Game of Thrones actress has become something of a style icon over the past years, with many fans marvelling over her timeless beauty and glamorous fashion sense.

Hannah, 49, has opened up about an interaction she once had with a drama teacher that “gave her a complex for years” in a new interview with Strictly Come Dancing star Michelle Visage, 55. The Ted Lasso star, who many will know as Rebecca Welton from the iconic Apple+ comedy series, spoke to Michelle about the shocking incident on her BBC Sounds podcast, Rule Breakers.

The national treasure, who hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool last year, spoke about how both her head teacher and drama teacher had tried to discourage her from a career on stage and screen. The Sex Education actress recalled: “I had one drama teacher that said to the whole class, ‘Oh, Hannah will never work on screen (because of her looks).

“And I thought, I will do. Come hell or high water, I will work on screen.

“And it gave me a complex for years, and this is why in my Emmy’s speech, I made a point,” she continued. “The one thing I said to myself [was], ‘If this weird moment comes and I get this award, and I get my foot in this door, I’m going to rip it off its hinges for music theatre people or theatre people to follow.’”

As well as enjoying a successful career on screen in recent years, Hannah previously appeared in several high-profile West End shows.

The actress, who has received three Olivier Award nominations for her work, has starred in the likes of Spamalot, the 2010 Regent’s Park revival of Into the Woods, and The Wizard of Oz.

Elsewhere in her chat with Michelle, Hannah opened up about the lack of encouragement she also received from her head teacher when she was at school.

She said: “I remember saying to my headmistress… Who said, ‘You’re bright enough to read drama.’

“And I said, ‘I don’t want to read drama, I want to do drama.’

“She refused to give me a reference, so I managed to get a scholarship for the drama school I went to,” Hannah continued.

“And I walked back in, put it on her desk and left the room without shutting the door…”

Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers is available now, only on BBC Sounds.
