Helen George kicks off King and I musical tour after Call The Midwife exit rumours

Call The Midwife star Helen George has reprised her role as Anna Leonowens in the West End show The King and I, opposite co-star Darren Lee.

Pictures from the big-budget show currently at the Dominion Theatre show the actress in character as a school teacher, for the royal offspring of the King of Siam.

Discussing her role with The Sunday Times last year, the 39-year-old said: “There’s a strength to her. She has to make this work.

“And it’s something that I have lived through. I am a single mother who has to be financially responsible for both of my children.

“There’s no man in my life currently, and there’s no man in Anna’s life. So I thought, this is a perfect match for me, especially now.”

The King and I is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical romance has returned to the UK following its sold out season at The London Palladium.

On stage until March 2, the show will feature songs such as Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance.

Helen’s role comes amid ongoing rumours she could be stepping down from Call The Midwife as her long-serving character Trixie Franklin.

Speculation began in back in November shortly after it was claimed that her on-screen husband Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix) was due to leave the show, although the BBC are yet to comment.

Quizzed on her future by The Times, she said: “I don’t know what the plan is. Like in life, you just never know what’s going to happen.”

She went on to say that nevertheless, she will keep her schedule busy, adding: “I get a bit restless when I have too much time. I don’t like to ponder my own thoughts.”
