Shuichi Nakamura, a Japanese father, and Carolyn Merrow Nakamura, an American mother, welcomed Hikaru Nakamura into the world on December 9, 1968 in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. His father was a former public school teacher, while his mother was a classically educated musician.

When he was two years old, his family relocated to the United States of America. Sadly, in 1990, when he was only three years old, his parents got divorced.

When Hikaru Nakamura was seven years old, his Sri Lankan stepfather Sunil Weeramantry, a FIDE Master and chess author, started teaching him the game.
