Inside Christina Applegate’s devastating diagnosis as actress ‘won’t be on-camera again’

Christina Applegate rose to fame as a teenage sitcom star during the late 1980s and has steadily kept above the waves of stardom in Hollywood ever since, flaunting her versatile acting skills and raking in accolades and awards.

However, in 2021 while filming the third season of her hit Netflix show Dead to Me, the actress received a devastating diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, but opted to soldier on and keep the news private until she couldn’t anymore.

The surprise diagnosis came years after Christina initially just felt a bit unbalanced while filming a dance scene, and her tennis skills began to wane but she chalked it all up to not focusing on her physical health enough.

As time went on, her symptoms began to worsen and she started getting a numb, tingling sensation in her extremities and eventually went to the doctors where the diagnosis prompted production on Dead to Me to shut down for a brief hiatus.

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong condition that is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the brain and nerves, with a variety of possible symptoms, although it most commonly includes problems with balance, walking or vision.

The condition has no cure and it’s not currently understood what causes it as a whole but some medications and treatments can ease symptoms.

Having previously defeated breast cancer while in the public eye in 2008, Christina opted to keep the news on a need-to-know basis until, months later, the medications she had been put on caused her to gain 40lbs, drastically changing her appearance.

Once the series finished filming, the actress waved goodbye to her life in front of the camera too as she would be staying off set due to the challenges of her diagnosis.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in May, Christina tragically confirmed the rumors that fans had already seen her final performance in Dead to Me alongside Linda Cardellini.

She said: “I’m probably not going to work on-camera again, but I’m so glad that I went out with someone who is by far the greatest actress I’ve ever worked with in my entire life if not the greatest human I’ve ever known.”

In the few appearances she has made this year, the actress has sported custom canes that make a statement with candid messages like: ‘FU MS.’

The Hollywood star, who turns 52 today, also revealed her daily life is far from what it used to be just two years ago, saying there’s “never a good day” when living with MS.

She candidly admitted getting in the show is “frightening to me” because her legs aren’t as stable as they used to be and while she can “still drive my car short distances” she can’t go down the stairs.
