James May calls for new car show despite Grand Tour exit and BBC ‘resting’ Top Gear

The Grand Tour star James May has claimed there is an audience for a brand new motoring show, despite walking away from the Amazon Prime series. It comes after the BBC announced it has “rested” its popular show Top Gear after presenter Freddie Flintoff was involved in a terrible crash.

It was also revealed in November that The Grand Tour was wrapping up, with its final two episodes airing later this year. However, motor enthusiast James has claimed that, in spite of this, a new car series is just what fans need.

The former BBC host, 60, has said that there is still plenty of appetite for a show revolving around cars – but he doesn’t want to host it. In a new interview with the Sun, the star admitted that he feels “too old” to take on such a role, insisting that co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson, 63, and Richard Hammond, 54, are in the same boat.

He told the publication: “If you wanted to make a serious, slightly more consumerish car show there’s never been a better time for it because it’s a very interesting topic. What is going to happen to the car, car ownership, attitudes to the car, how we use it, dispose of it, how we power it?

“It’s all interesting stuff, it’s the most interesting time in the car’s history since it was invented. So I can’t believe somewhere or other, a slightly more modern car show won’t emerge.

“But we can’t do it as we’re too old,” he added.

Top Gear fans were left devastated to learn that presenter Freddie had been involved in a near-fatal crash.

In November, the BBC announced it was “resting” the show after the former international cricketer, 46, was injured in an accident during production.

The star was airlifted to hospital on December 13, 2022 after the crash occured at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome.

Despite sources at the time claiming Freddie’s injuries were non-life threatening, his 16-year-old son Corey has since claimed his dad was “lucky to be alive”.

“It was a pretty nasty crash,” he revealed to MailOnline. “It is shocking. We are all shocked but just hope he’s going to be OK.”
