Former Top Gear presenter James May has revealed details about his latest project in a new interview. His comments about the “intense” experience come after the car enthusiast is said to have exited The Grand Tour.
Late last month, it was revealed that James, 60, and co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond would no longer host the Amazon Prime Video show. The news came after the trio recently returned from filming in Zimbabwe for a Grand Tour special.
Jeremy, 63, broke his silence on the matter via Instagram and told his seven million followers: “Been a busy day. No more Grand Tour after next year but a LOT more Clarkson’s Farm. Which, this evening, is looking extremely lovely.”
As per the Independent, the beloved programme has not been axed, and bosses are exploring other options, including new presenters. Despite his alleged departure from the show after seven years, James is expected back on the small screen very soon.
In a new interview, the presenter has spoken at length about his latest project – a new instalment of his travel documentary series, James May: Our Man in… After previously visiting Japan and Italy, season three will chronicle the star’s movements in India.
Discussing his experience in the country, James said: “The experience is intense, admittedly. It’s noisy and crowded and hot, and it’s certainly harder work than going to Florence.”
He added to The Radio Times: “But if you relax and don’t bring your European sensitivities to it, it’s a great country.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the documentary maker claimed that the country was “remarkable”. He added that it’s “quite a loose society” and that “everyone should visit at least once”.
James also explained that his favourite place on the tour to visit was Sundarbans. The latter is one of the largest forests in the world and is the known home of the Royal Bengal Tiger.
He also added that Sundarbans is where Mahatma Gandhi claimed the “soul of India” resided.
The ex-BBC star’s latest interview comes just weeks after it was revealed Top Gear was being “rested”.
Production on the 34th series of the show was suspended earlier this year after Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff was involved in a car accident whilst filming.
In a statement, the broadcaster said: “Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future.
“The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them.”
James was an integral part of Top Gear from 2003 until 2015, along with Jeremy and Richard, 51.
Following the Clarkson’s Farm star’s dismissal from the BBC show, James declined to renew his contract and also exited.
