Jodie Foster says Gen Z can be ‘really annoying to work with’

Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster says she finds Generation Z colleagues “really annoying” to work with.

The 61-year-old said she sometimes found the attitudes of younger workers difficult to understand. In an interview with the Guardian, she said: “They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10.30am.’”

Foster, who starred in hits such as Silence of the Lambs and Taxi Driver, praised The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, saying the actor was a “vector of authenticity”.

However Foster, who was a child star, says she feels “compelled” to help younger actors “because it was hard growing up”.

Foster joked Gen Z stars – who are generally born during the late 1990s and early 2000s – are “really annoying – especially in the workplace”.

She added: “They’re like: ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10.30am.’

“Or, like, in emails, I’ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling?

“And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?’”

When asked what advice she would give to aspiring actors, Foster said they need to “learn how to relax” and “not think about it so much” and “how to come up with something that’s theirs”.

She said: “I can help them find that, which is so much more fun than being, with all the pressure behind it, the protagonist of the story.”

Foster singled out Ramsey for praise after the pair met at Elle’s Women in Hollywood celebration. Foster said she would have been unable to wear a suit and no make-up to a Hollywood event when she was young.

She said: “There are other ways of being a woman, and it’s really important for people to see that. And Bella, who gave the best speech, was wearing the most perfect suit, beautifully tailored, and a middle parting and no makeup.

“Because we weren’t free. Because we didn’t have freedom. And hopefully that’s what the vector of authenticity that’s happening offers – the possibility of real freedom.”

Foster, who won the best actress award at the Oscars for her role in both Silence of the Lambs and The Accused, is tipped for a nomination for her role in Nyad. Speaking to the Guardian, she also address her son’s attitudes towards women.

She says that while they are both “super feminists” now, her eldest son once believed he had to be unpleasant to women to be a boy. She added: “And I was like, no! That’s not what it is to be a man! That’s what our culture has been selling you for all this time.”
