Since The Big Bang Theory came to an end, fans haven’t seen much of Johnny Galecki. He briefly discussed his future in previous interviews, revealing that he was taking time off, but was intrigued by taking on work behind the camera.
As for work in front of the camera, offers have been made – it just seems as though Galecki is content with staying off the map and “taking a breather.”
TV Insider discussed whether The Conners said goodbye to Johnny Galecki for good. Executive producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan made quite the reveal, stating that an offer was made to get Galecki back. However, the actor was still set on taking time off.
“We even approached [Galecki] for this episode, to be honest with you,” Helford told TVLine. “It was just one of those things where it didn’t work out — and like you say, he’s certainly taking a step away, taking a breather, and we understand that. But we have to deal with what’s going on in the Conners’ lives, so we just decided this was the time [to address David’s absence].”
“The last time Johnny was here, he really went out of his way to say how much he loved not only the legacy of the show, but what we’re doing with The Conners,” Caplan added. “He’s a big fan, and he loved being on the show. But real life tends to take priority, and if he needs to step away, we all respect that.”

Johnny Galecki had a memorable appearance alongside Stephen Colbert, but fans sensed the actor was nervous during the chat.
As for his character on the show, he had to be written off given that a return wasn’t taking place.
“We’re approaching the grand bow of the show, maybe next season or whatever, and there’s only so long we can go [without seeing David]. And Johnny is just too busy. We love him, and he would love to be doing stuff with us, but it just hasn’t worked out scheduling wise.”
Despite the fact that he didn’t return for the finale, Galecki had a blast returning to the show in 2015.

Johnny Galecki told People that his guest-starring return was very surreal and emotional, as expected. Galecki revealed that entering the same set was the most surreal part of the experience.
“I was excited to see everyone in the same room again but what I wasn’t expecting was walking onto that set again, which the designers recreated to a T.”
He continues, “But the little things like the knobs on the stove, it’s just weird how it opened up your brain to memories you didn’t even realize existed in your psyche.”
“It was very, very surreal and emotional and celebratory. It was like going to your 20th high school reunion except all the people are your heroes, not the bullies.”

The chemistry between Johnny Galecki and Melissa Rauch was obvious during a candid interview outside of The Big Bang Theory set.
At the time, Galecki was hoping to return, but did admit scheduling was tricky.
“It’s a lot of scheduling and a little bit of politics because it’s two networks but everyone has been supportive. I most probably would not be on Big Bang if it wasn’t for Roseanne. And they understand the emotional attachment and this high school crush that I still have on this character.”

Johnny Galecki Revealed He Had The Best Teachers During His Time On Roseanne
Working on Roseanne was a massive learning experience for Johnny Galecki, especially so early on in his career. The actor admitted the experience he gained from the show was very important, especially given the teachers he was working with at the time.
“That experience, from 16-21, I really consider my college in many ways. To work with Roseanne, who’s from the standup world, and John (Goodman), who’s a terribly disciplined film actor, I had the best professors in the business.”
Galecki’s career almost went in a different direction at the time, as after Roseanne he decided to take off, and offers weren’t coming in. Once the actor almost changed fields into bathroom design, an offer alongside Kelly Ripa in Hope & Faith came in. Shortly after, The Big Bang Theory came along.
