Born in Eldoret, Kenya, on December 2, 1999 (he will be 24 years old in 2023), Kelvin Kiptum comes from a place known for producing many elite runners. He was raised in an athletic household; his mother played volleyball and his father was a former runner. Two brothers and two sisters, making up his four siblings, are all avid athletes. Kiptum began running at an early age, encouraged by his father and idols like Eliud Kipchoge and Haile Gebrselassie. He attended St. Patrick’s High School in Iten, where he received instruction from renowned Irish coach Brother Colm O’Connell, who has guided multiple Kenyan champions.

Professional life and Career

In 2016, Kiptum started running long-distance marathons professionally. In October of 2018, Kiptum won his first professional event, the Eldoret Half Marathon, with a clocking of 1:02:01. He then made his debut internationally at the Lisbon Half Marathon, coming in sixth place with a strong showing from Eldoret. With a time of 2:09:53, Kelvin Kiptum went on to win the 2019 Casablanca marathon. Furthermore, he won the Beirut marathon once more, clocking in at 2:13:18. After finishing sixth in the Valencia half marathon in 2020 with a new personal best time of 58:42, he showed improvement in his performance.

On December 4, 2022, Kelvin won his first marathon in Valencia, Spain. Kelvin Kiptum became the third guy to break the world record in two hours and two minutes on his debut in the 2022 Valencia marathon. By completing this, he became the current world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge. Additionally, Kelvin Kiptum made history as the fastest debutant runner in Marathon history by achieving this. During the 2023 London Marathon, Kelvin Kiptum also put on a fantastic effort, setting the second-fastest time ever. Kelvin Kiptum faced battle against Geoffrey Kamworor, who came in second, in order to earn the gold.

He went on to break the previous World Record in the Landon marathon after vanquishing Kamworor. Eliud Kipchoge also  formerly held the record with a best time of 2:02:32, but Kiptum beat it in just a few minutes with a best time of 2:01:25. In October 2023, the rising star will also compete in his first Chicago Marathon on the WMM track.

After completing the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours and 34 seconds, Kelvin  also set a new world record. At the halfway, 25-kilometer, and 30-kilometer points, the 23-year-old trailed the word record face, but at the end, he grabbed the piece to make history. Kiptum finished in an unofficial time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon in 2023. He also surpassed world record holder Eliud Kipchoge’s time of 2:01:09. He  also wore the new Nike Dev 163 prototype shoes for competition, which World Athletics allows. They are also , according to Nike, the Alphafly 3, and they’ll be on sale in January 2024.
