Lindsay Lohan May Have Ruined Her Music Career During One Disastrous Performance

Highlights

  • Lindsay Lohan’s debut album was overshadowed by a disastrous lip-syncing performance on Good Morning America.
  • Fans and major outlets questioned whether Lohan was actually singing, and the controversy hurt her music career.
  • Lohan had already expressed self-consciousness about singing, making the public shaming even more difficult for her.

Throughout music history, many popular stars have made huge mistakes. One perfect example of that is the time Nicki Minaj had to pay Tracy Chapman a fortune. Fortunately, some music stars have been able to recover from the mistakes they’ve made.

Back when Lindsay Lohan was trying to launch a pop music career, things seemed to be going great at first. Then, Lohan made a massive mistake that may have forever ruined any plans she had to take the music world by storm permanently.

Lindsay Lohan’s Lip Syncing Nightmare Embarrassed Her In Front Of The World

In 2004, Lindsay Lohan’s movie career reached its zenith. After starring in The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday in previous years, Lohan’s movies Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Mean Girls were released in 2004. What should have been the biggest year of Lohan’s career was tarnished by a huge embarrassment she suffered while trying to become a musician.

Months after Mean Girls was released and weeks after she appeared on an episode of That ’70s Show, Lohan’s debut album was released. Titled “Speak”, Lohan’s album featured three singles; “First”, “Over”, and “Rumors”.

The first of those singles, “Rumors” was the biggest hit of the bunch as it became a minor hit for the singer and actor. A song about how Lohan was sick of being judged by the media and the subject of headlines, the strange twist of fate is “Rumors” became gossip fodder.

The reason why “Rumors” wound up causing Lohan to be the subject of gossip is because of a truly disastrous performance of the song.

Anthony Bourdain tipped Joe Rogan off to his struggles and the podcast host had absolutely no idea at the time.

Once “Rumors” was released as a single, Lohan appeared on Good Morning America to promote the song.

Unfortunately for Lohan, however, and any plans she had for her music career, things didn’t exactly go as planned. As Lohan’s performance aired on live television, many viewers came to believe that she wasn’t singing at all.

After the fact, many of those fans went on the internet and expressed their opinion that Lohan was lip-syncing. For proof of those claims, many viewers argued that Lohan’s mouth didn’t seem to match the singing that could be heard in general. More specifically, there were moments in which observers claimed Lohan’s voice could be heard when her mouth was closed.

Not only did fans go online to question whether Lohan was really singing, but major outlets joined in on the conversation too. One example of that is the fact that Entertainment Weekly published an article asking if Lohan pulled an Ashlee Simpson.

What artists had the worst lip-syncing fails ever, according to Watchmojo?

As a part of that article, EW quoted what Casablanca Records spokesperson Kim Jakwerth told the Post about the controversy.

”Lindsay sang completely live, the band was live and the background singers were live. The first song had some background. It’s a little more rock and roll and needed it there. It’s about how you make the song sound exactly like the record.”

”All musical artists that perform on Good Morning America are required to perform live. On occasion, artists will have a backing track to support their live vocals.”

Following the controversy, none of Lohan’s other songs became as successful as “Rumors” was. The only song that Lohan released which was a minor hit was “Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)”.

Throughout music history, there have been several stars whose careers were completely ruined following lip-syncing scandals like the one Lohan suffered. While it is impossible to say for sure if the disastrous Good Morning America performance doomed Lohan’s music career, it certainly didn’t help.

In complete fairness to Lohan, she has claimed there was another reason why her music career ended. According to what Lohan told Who What Wear in 2022, she chose to give up her music career, so her sister could become a singer instead.

“I slowed down on the singing because my sister’s biggest passion in life is singing, and I really wanted her to have that path and didn’t want to distract from that at all.”

Lindsay Lohan Was Already Self-Conscious About Singing Before Her Lip-Syncing Fail

By the time Lindsay Lohan made her way to Good Morning America for her infamous performance, she was already a major star. As a result, it makes sense that the people behind the show wanted to interview Lohan before she began performing.

Lindsay Lohan’s Nearly Unknown Brother Dakota Lohan Has A Completely Different Relationship With The Star Than The Rest Of Their Family

Despite all the controversies surrounding Lindsay Lohan’s family, her relationship with her brother Dakota Lohan is heartwarming.

In 2004, Lohan sat down to speak to Diane Sawyer before making her way to the morning show’s stage. Once fans learn what Lohan told Sawyer, it makes the scandal that revolved around her GMA performance even sadder.

While speaking to Sawyer, Lohan explained that she already felt uncomfortable seeing herself sing.

Given that Lohan already felt self-conscious about seeing herself sing, the idea of her being publicly shamed for lip-syncing is bad enough. That only gets worse considering that Lohan also told Sawyer about how much singing meant to her.

”When I’m singing, I’m more myself.”

Since everyone does embarrassing things, it is a shame that when stars like Lohan do something in public, they are often never allowed to forget it.
