Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girl Return Took A Turn After She Took Exception To A Behind The Scenes Moment With Tina Fey

Highlights

  • Lindsay Lohan made a surprise cameo in the new Mean Girls movie and Tina Fey thought it was important to have her in the film since she was the heart of the original.
  • Lohan was offended by a joke in the film that referenced a hurtful comment made about her in the past.
  • Fey and Lorne Michaels staged an intervention with Lohan backstage at SNL, expressing concern for her health and citing examples of other stars who had suffered from drug addiction.

Lindsay Lohan first rose to fame when she appeared in the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap. Her acting talent helped her become one of her generation’s most famous teen actresses. Lohan’s roles in films like Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen helped solidify this position.

However, it was Lohan’s starring role in Mean Girls that would take her career to new heights. The film was written by Tina Fey, who was known for her work on Saturday Night Live. The film was very successful and later became a cult classic.

Fey and Lohan have had a close relationship over the years, with Fey even taking part in an intervention backstage during Lohan’s 2005 hosting gig on SNL. Lohan even had a cameo in the 2024 musical film version of Mean Girls. However, Lohan also revealed she was unhappy with one particular joke in the film.

Lindsay Made A Cameo In The New ‘Mean Girls’ Movie, But Was Offended By A Joke

In 2024, a new Mean Girls movie was released. Like the original from 20 years earlier, the film was the brainchild of Tina Fey. The new version of the story was also a musical, based on the successful Broadway production.

The film even included a surprise cameo from Lohan herself. When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Fey shared how she scored the surprise cameo for the film.

“Paramount was like, ‘Can you get any of the original ladies? And I was like, ‘I can’t fit five people in.’ I felt like if I could only get one person as a surprise, the original movie is really Lindsay’s movie,” Fey told the outlet. “As great as they all are, she’s the heart of that movie.”

“And I thought, well, what could she do? I didn’t think [she should] play a teacher. I was trying to think of something that you wouldn’t expect,” she continued. “And just to have her do that late in the movie, it also feels like it comes, I hope, at a time where fans weren’t expecting one more little surprise. It also lets her be smart, which Cady is.”

Jane Fonda Confronted Lindsay Lohan After She Arrived Late To The Set Of Georgia Rule

Jane Fonda didn’t have the easiest time alongside Lindsay Lohan in Georgia Rule.

However, while Lohan appeared the film and showed up to the premiere, she made it clear that she wasn’t happy about one joke in the film.

During Megan Thee Stallion’s appearance in the film, she says about Cady, “Y2K fire crotch is back.” The line references a viral paparazzi video from 2006 where Brandon Davis referred to Lohan as “a fire crotch.”

“Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film,” Lohan’s rep said.

Lindsay Originally Wanted To Play Regina George In Tina Fey’s ‘Mean Girls’

When Lohan was first attached to the Mean Girls project, she originally wanted to play the role of Regina George, the popular leader of the Plastics. Director Mark Waters and writer Tina Fey both liked the idea of Lohan in the role.

However, according to Vanity Fair, others involved with the film wanted Lohan to remain likable and didn’t want her to ruin the brand she built for herself at the time. They also felt that since Lohan was a “newly bankable” star, she should be in the “central, relatable role.”

There were others who simply didn’t believe Lohan’s audience would accept her as the bad girl.

“Lindsay brings this gigantic advantage in casting in that you automatically like her,” producer Lorne Michaels said.

Fey then decided that it would be a good idea for Lohan to play the role of a good girl “who gets to turn into Regina.”

Lohan later explained that her desire to play Regina came from wanting to do something different from her previous films.

“I had just played—in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Freaky Friday—not the cool girl in school,” Lohan said. “I was still seventeen years old and I wanted to be the cool girl on set.”

Lindsay Opened Up About An Intervention Staged By Tina Fey And Lorne Michaels Backstage At ‘SNL’

As 2005 dawned, Lohan became the subject of serious rumors regarding her weight. Paparazzi snapped several pictures of Lohan that summer looking much thinner than before. A lot of people were concerned for the young star, believing it could be the result of drug use or an eating disorder.

Lohan graced the cover of Vanity Fair that fall and spoke candidly about the previous year. She said that a hospitalization in 2004 was a big factor in her weight loss.

“I didn’t want to complain, but that was my way to complain,” Lohan said, “to actually let everyone know, ‘Yeah, I actually am really sick.’” She said she lost 15 pounds in the hospital. “I wasn’t eating. I was on an IV.”

But Lohan admitted she still wasn’t healthy, despite leaving the hospital and getting back to work.

“I was sick,” she revealed. “Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, ‘You’re going to die if you don’t take care of yourself.’”

Among those people were Fey and Michaels. The duo were responsible for an intervention of sorts, having a heart-to-heart with Lohan backstage on Saturday Night Live.

“They sat me down,” Lohan began, “literally before I was going to do the show, and they said, ‘You need to take care of yourself. We care about you too much, and we’ve seen too many people do this,’ and I just started bawling. I knew I had a problem and I couldn’t admit it.”

They talked to Lohan about John Belushi and Chris Farley, who both passed away of drug overdoses. Fey told the outlet that Amy Poehler spoke to Lohan about the situation as well.

“Amy was good and tough on her,” Fey said, “saying, ‘You’re too skinny … I’m not going to ask you why, but you’re too skinny and I don’t like it.’”
