Lulu’s ‘frightening’ reason behind David Bowie break up as she lifts lid on romance

Lulu has shared a rare insight into her relationship with legendary musician David Bowie, with whom she recorded the hit song The Man Who Sold the World in 1974. The music icons had met one year earlier and Lulu, 75, was taken aback by how much David “got” her.

She recalled to Gyles Brandreth: “When I first met [David Bowie], he wanted to make a hit record with me, he was absolutely determined.

“He said, ‘[The record company] don’t get you and they don’t get your voice either’. When I heard that, and I’d already been in the business a long time… I felt like I had been seen.”

Reminiscing on their first meeting in a separate interview with The Guardian, the Shout singer described: “His hair was orange, his skin was alabaster. Once we’d had something to drink, we were head-to-head, nose-to-nose for the rest of the evening.”

The pair got together and enjoyed an “amazing” relationship. However, it didn’t last when Lulu became “frightened” by the Ziggy Stardust star’s lifestyle.

She added to Gyles on his Rosebud podcast: “I had a relationship with David Bowie, that was kind of amazing really. We recognised something in each other.

“Then when I went to New York after the first hit, he was involved in a lifestyle that was frightening to me and I ran.

“I sensed danger, and I would say that I almost threw myself into John Frieda’s arms.”

Lulu married hairstylist John Frieda in 1977 and together they had a son, actor Jordan Frieda, 46. They were married for 14 years before they divorced in 1991.

Decades after her romance with Bowie, Lulu still remembers that time fondly and admits she wonders how life would have been if they stayed together.

She added to The Guardian: “There is a part of me that thinks, ‘What if the relationship would have continued?’ I’m a very private person, and most people only know a piece of me, but Bowie got me.”

It comes after Lulu announced that she will be retiring from touring following a sensational 60-year music career.

The Boom Bang-a-Bang singer will perform her final shows during her Champagne For Lulu tour in April. Her final performance will be held at the London Palladium on April 17, which also marks the 60th anniversary of her hit Shout.
