The award-winning actress, who grew up in Childwall, Liverpool, revealed she felt she had to change her accent when she first started out.

Jodie, 30, said of the charming psychopathic killer that made her a worldwide name in the hit BBC series: “Villanelle would have suited being a Scouser. The Russian accent was needed to help with the transformation though.

“I used to think I needed to change my voice to get away from myself but now I don’t think that’s true. So I’ve really enjoyed acting with my own accent lately.” She did so for her role as a carer in the Channel 4 pandemic drama Help, with fellow Liverpudlian Stephen Graham.

And then the star played a working class girl-turned-barrister in the play Prima Facie, which took the West End and then Broadway
by storm, again using her real accent.

Jodie added: “I loved doing my own accent in Help and Prima Facie.

“I think everyone knows I’m from Liverpool now but it was such a joy to use my accent.”

Known for perfecting an array of dialects, Jodie’s latest movie sees her speak in her own Merseyside accent once again. She plays “Mother” in the film The End We Start From, which is an adaptation of Megan Hunter’s 2017 debut novel and co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch.

Out in cinemas last Friday, the film is a post-apocalyptic survival drama which follows a woman and her newborn baby trying to find their way home as an environmental crisis submerges London in flood waters.

The Hollywood Reporter has called Jodie’s performance “career-defining” and the movie has received nine nominations from the 2023 British Independent Film Awards, including Best Lead Performance for Jodie.

The star has revealed that she got the acting bug early – it was when aged 12 at the Liverpool drama festival that Jodie knew for certain that she wanted to act.

In an interview last week, she revealed: “Everyone had to perform a monologue.

“I did a piece about the Hillsborough stadium disaster and this young girl on the anniversary of her dad’s death at the football match.

“My dad hadn’t seen me act before. I remember his face so vividly after I had finished.

“I got such a sense of gratification from making my parents proud. It really made me hungry.”
