It hasn’t even been a year since Taylor Swift broke up with her boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn, but she’s already had a few high-profile romances since then, including her short-lived fling with The 1975 singer Matty Healy.
However, Matty’s controversial reputation quickly caused backlash for Taylor, which may have contributed to why their relationship ended as quickly as it started. Considering Matty’s recent comments on Kanye West, it’s likely this is one past relationship Taylor wishes her fans would forget about.
During a performance with his band on Wednesday night in New York City, Matty didn’t hold back in praising Kanye, despite the rapper’s spotted history, including antisemitic and anti-Black comments.
Matty Called Kanye A “Hero” For His Stance On The Grammys
Matty initially interrupted the set to complain about The 1975’s lack of Grammy nominations. “The fact that we didn’t get nominated for a Grammy was a f–king outrage,” the singer told the crowd, hurling a series of expletives.
“The reason people don’t say that is ’cause it’s not a very tasteful thing to say, but I’m way past tasteful,” Matty went on. “Are you f–king mental?” Footage of the singer’s comments was recorded and uploaded to TikTok following the event in a video that’s now-viral.
Matty proceeded to say that his band’s albums — 2016’s “I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It” and 2018’s “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” – both deserved Grammy’s. He also said the same about their 2022 song “About You.”
During the minutes-long rant, Matty name dropped Kanye West, who has also been critical of the Grammys. With 21 wins in total, Kanye is one of the top Grammy winners in history, despite his criticism of the awards show.
“I’m not being self-celebratory, but Kanye is one of my heroes,” Matty told the crowd “You know what? You’ve got to f–king believe in yourself.”
Nevertheless, the singer seemed to foresee backlash over his praise of Ye, as Matty acknowledged Kanye is an “awkward hero to have right now” given his problematic history.
Taylor Moved On Quickly From Matty After Backlash
He then seemed to defend Kanye’s hateful past comments, saying, “But separate the antisemitism, just think about the self-belief.”
Matty’s comments are especially interesting given that Taylor Swift has been in a years-long feud with Kanye, which started after he interrupted her MTV Video Music Awards speech in 2009 to insist Beyonce should’ve won the category instead.
Taylor hasn’t responded to Matty’s recent comments, but she’s clearly moved on from their brief romance, which lasted under two months before their break-up in June 2023.
Within a few months, Taylor had gone public with her current relationship with Kansas Chiefs player Travis Kelce. She’s been a fixture at his NFL games, while Travis also recently joined her on some Eras stops. Reports say the new couple are going strong and getting serious, proving that Taylor is leaving her controversial relationship with Matty Healy in the past.
