Highlights

  • Prince Harry returns to the UK despite family tensions, while Meghan Markle stays silent and remains in California with their children.
  • Prince Harry’s meeting with his father, King Charles, was brief, suggesting ongoing tension within the family.
  • King Charles is hopeful for reconciliation with Harry, but a reconciliation between Harry and his brother, Prince William, seems unlikely at this time. Meghan’s silence may not be helping to ease tensions.

Following the revelation that Britain’s King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer, reports confirm that his son Prince Harry returned to the U.K. despite his estrangement from the royal family. But his wife Meghan Markle not only failed to join him for the trip, but she’s staying silent on the King’s health woes.

According to PEOPLE, Meghan elected to stay in California with her and Harry’s two children while he journeyed back to his native London. The publication reports that Harry touched down in the U.K. on Tuesday, having boarded a flight from Los Angeles the previous day.

Meghan Markle Recalls First Christmas In UK As The Royals Refuse To Invite Them This Year

Harry and Meghan are reportedly having a lonely Christmas after they didn’t receive an invite from the royals to join in the festivities in England.

Accompanied by what appeared to be two black SUVs under police escort, Prince Harry’s journey from Heathrow Airport to Clarence House, King Charles’ longstanding residence in London, garnered widespread attention. King Charles, who recently returned to London from Sandringham, where he was seen attending church with Queen Camilla on Sunday, has since begun outpatient treatment for cancer (it’s unconfirmed what type he has).

Speculation suggests that Prince Harry and King Charles have not been in each other’s company since the coronation ceremony held in May, adding an air of significance to the timing of Harry’s return. Harry and Meghan have been on the outs with the royal family since relocating to California in 2021 and proceeding to levy a variety of accusations against the royals, largely about the mistreatment Markle says she endured while they attended to their royal duties in the U.K. after tying the knot in 2018.

“That is good,” a source told PEOPLE about Harry’s return. “Hopefully [Harry] will bring the grandchildren at some point too, as that would be lovely for all of them.”

Though Harry’s meeting with his father was significant, it was reportedly brief. InStyle reports that their meeting seemed to last no longer than 45 minutes. Harry was seen arriving at Clarence House on Tuesday at 2:42 p.m, only to leave before 3:30 p.m.

Harry and King Charles’ short reunion, coupled with Meghan’s silence on the ongoing situation, seems to suggest things are still tense between the family members. Nevertheless, various reports claim that King Charles’ diagnosis could be a chance to mend broken bridges.

As per Entertainment Tonight, King Charles is reportedly hopeful he can repair his relationship with Harry. “[King Charles] desperately wants to reconcile with Harry,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told the outlet.

“The king would have been hugely relieved and comforted by the fact that Harry flew over,” she continued, adding it was likely “emotional and probably quite difficult for both of them.”

Meghan Markle Wants To Move To LA To Fix Career Though She Can’t Afford It

One report says Harry and Meghan are thinking of downsizing so they can relocate to Los Angeles to focus on her acting career.

“He wants to repair that relationship and indeed have a relationship with his daughter-in-law and his grandchildren,” Nicholl continued. “I think when someone has a serious health scare like this, it does make you reassess things and I think that’s why Harry got on the first flight he could.”

While things may be hopeful for King Charles and Prince Harry, Nicholl didn’t express the same positive outlook on the prince’s relationship with his older brother Prince William. Multiple reports say a reconciliation is unlikely between the brothers, at least now, and Meghan’s silence on the subject may not be helping to calm the tensions that still exist in the royal family.
