Michael J Fox was supported by his wife Tracy Pollan as he made a surprise appearance at the BAFTA Awards on Sunday evening. Michael, 62, was described as a “true legend of cinema” by David Tennant when he introduced him to the stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
The Back To The Future star presented the Best Film gong, which was won by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
He was greeted with a standing ovation and cheers from the audience as he came on stage in a wheelchair but stood at the podium.
The activist and former Hollywood actor – who was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease a year after Back To The Future Part III was released in 1990 – described films as “magic” which can “change your life”.
Presenting the prize, he said in his emotional speech: “Five films were nominated in this category tonight and all five have something in common. They are the best of what we do.
“No matter who you are or where you’re from, these films can bring us together.
“There’s a reason why they say movies are magic because movies can change your day. It can change your outlook. Sometimes it can change your life.”
Following his powerful speech, he shared a sweet moment with Tracy backstage. The 63-year-old actress looked stunning in a white gown with jewel embellishments.
The couple posed for loved-up snaps and were even joined by David Beckham who said he was “starstruck”.
Michael founded the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, which has raised more than £1.58 billion, CBS News reported in November.
He was honoured at the Governors Awards in 2022 with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary Oscar recognising outstanding philanthropic efforts.
He met Tracy Pollan back in 1985 when they were cast as each other’s love interests in Family Ties. While they were just friends at first, they were reunited a few years later in Bright Lights, Big City and sparks began to fly.
Within seven months, they were engaged and went on to get married in 1988.
In their 35 years together, they have welcomed four children together: Sam, 34, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 29, and Esme, 22.
