Nicole Kidman wanted to settle things quickly after it was rumored she had ruined her co-star, Jude Law’s marriage. Kidman is an incredibly successful and talented star, and since her divorce from Tom Cruise, her success has taken off even more. The A-lister has produced and starred in several films and television shows which have earned high praise.
When she and Jude Law played the leads in Cold Mountain together, they had steamy on-screen chemistry. While shooting the historical romance, Jude Law also began having troubles in his marriage. When it was implied that Nicole Kidman and Jude Law had had an affair on the set of Cold Mountain, which had wrecked Jude Law’s marriage, Kidman wasted no time in hiring a lawyer and going to court.
Certain Articles Implied Nicole Kidman Had Wrecked Jude Law’s Marriage
Nicole Kidman is one of several celebrities who likes to keep her private life to herself. She has spoken about her family on certain occasions, including all of her children, but mostly keeps quiet about her personal life.
In 2002, Kidman filmed the Civil-War drama, Cold Mountain, with Jude Law and Renée Zellweger. While they were filming, and before Hollywood’s award season (during which Nicole Kidman was in the running for the Oscar for best actress for The Hours), some articles implied she and Jude Law had an affair on the set.
The stories also claimed the actress had brought trouble to Law’s marriage. Some stories even suggested that Kidman was dishonest when she insisted the rumors were untrue.
While Kidman was in London to premiere The Hours, instead of being asked about the film, members of the press questioned the star about rumors of her relationship with her Cold Mountain co-lead, Jude Law.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, when reporters asked the actress “if she and Law [were] an item, Kidman winced and said it’s not true.” She added, “No big love in my life as the moment.” When she was asked about her plans for Valentine’s Day, the actress responded, “I’ve got nothing planned.”
About the rumors, Jude Law released this statement, “As you know, my family has gone through a difficult time over the past weeks. While we truly appreciate the concern the media has shown towards us, we ask that you now please give us the privacy we eagerly need so that we can put our lives in order.”
The Daily Mail “alleged Kidman had led Law to cheat on his wife, causing the breakdown of his marriage,” according to The Guardian. “The article also claimed the actress’s repeated denials of the alleged affair were dishonest.”
After several publications wrote articles alleging that Kidman and Law had been intimate, and Kidman had brought troubles to Law’s marriage, Kidman defended herself and took them to court.
Nicole Kidman Wasted No Time In Hiring A Lawyer After The Allegations
When articles started coming out speculating that Nicole Kidman and Jude Law might have been involved with each other on the set of their film, Cold Mountain, the Nine Perfect Strangers actress wanted to stop the rumors, even if it meant legal action. Kidman brought libel action against publications including the Sun and the Daily Mail.
In court, The Hours actress’ solicitor, Keith Schilling, spoke about what had been published in the Sun. “He said the article was “meant and was understood to mean that the claimant (Ms. Kidman) had had an adulterous affair with Jude Law, who was at the time married with young children”.
Schilling continued, “The article implied that the claimant had led Jude Law to cheat on his wife Sadie Frost, and by her behavior caused the breakdown of their marriage.”
Schilling argued, “The publication of the article caused considerable damage to the claimant’s (Nicole Kidman) personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress.
Kidman’s solicitor in court for her lawsuit against the Daily Mail, Gideon Benaim, made a similar argument in the court. He added, “Her embarrassment was particularly acute as the allegations coincided with the run-up to the Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles in which she had been nominated for an award for best actress.”
Nicole Kidman Settled With Multiple Publications
After several articles had implied Nicole Kidman had had an affair with Jude Law on the set of their film Cold Mountain, wrecked his marriage and also was lying when she denied the rumors, Kidman took the sources of the rumors to court and sued for libel.
Proving there was no truth in the rumors, Kidman won her lawsuits, and wouldn’t have to answer questions about herself and her former co-star anymore.
Kidman’s solicitor, Keith Schilling said, about the Sun, its editor, etc., “The defendants are here today to publicly set the record straight and through their solicitor to personally apologize to the claimant (Nicole Kidman) for the distress and the embarrassment they have caused her.”
The publication “also agreed to publish an apology, and pay the claimant a sum in damages and her legal costs, and agreed not to repeat the allegations complained of.”
According to the Guardian, the Moulin Rouge! actress had also “won ‘substantial’ libel damages from the Daily Mail,” which had “published similar allegations that she had had an affair with Law.” The Daily Mail also apologized and agreed that the claims weren’t true, and baseless.
The Sunday Telegraph, which had “also repeated the allegations,” apologized to Kidman. In a statement Kidman released, she said, “I am glad that this has finally been resolved.” She reportedly didn’t keep the money she’d gained from the settlements, and donated it to charities.
Nicole Kidman went on to marry country music star Keith Urban. Jude Law and Sadie Frost divorced in 2003. Kidman was in no way a reason for their divorce, and the couple dealt with other issues. Law and Kidman worked together again on 2016’s Genius.
