Sir Patrick Stewart has spoken of his distress over his “non-existent” relationship with his two children, admitting that he thinks about them daily.
The Star Trek star, 83, admits that he feels “significant grief” being “separated” from his son, Daniel and daughter, Sophie whom he shares with his first wife, Sheila Falconer.
The Lord Of The Rings star said of their relationship, he admitted: “Given that I’m separated from my children now – we don’t have relationships – they have become very important.
“I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s – they’re not children anymore, they’re adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent.”
He added that “not a day goes by” that he isn’t “not pained by the memory of my children” and has taken responsibility for the estrangement.
The star blamed his lack of consistent parenting when they were growing up as part of the problem.
“I always put my acting work first, before my family.” he explained to the Irish Independent.
In a 2009 interview, he also told the Independent that he “could have done better as a parent” but “threw everything into work”.
However, he said he had tried to “correct it” with his grandchildren and believed Sophie and Daniel had forgiven him.
it’s not known when things soured again between him and his children.
He was pictured with son Daniel, also an actor, at a red carpet event in 2015.
Sir Patrick’s first marriage to their mother Sheila lasted for 24 years and ended in 1990.
In 2000, he married Wendy Neuss, one of the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, their union ended in divorce just three years later.
He married Sunny Ozell, an American singer and songwriter, in 2013.
