After openly speaking about his drug and alcohol issues over the years, Pete Doherty has revealed he’s been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The 44-year-old has admitted he’s been struggling to give up certain things in his life as he comes to terms with his new diagnosis.

In an interview with the Guardian’s Saturday magazine, the 44-year-old expressed: “I gave up the main poisons and my health improved. Then you get told alcohol and cheese and sugar are just as bad and you were healthier when you were on heroin.

“It’s not a joke. I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I’m lacking the discipline to tackle cholesterol.” Pete is best known for being the co-frontman of the Libertines which he formed with Carl Barat in 1997.

The musician has distanced himself from his previous rock and roll lifestyle and now leads a quiet life in Normandy, France.

In 2023, Pete invited Louis Theroux into his home for his BBC interview series, where the singer lives with his wife Katie de Vidas and their six-month-old daughter Billie-May.

As the pair discussed his colourful life, Pete began to cough and clutched his chest in pain.

He told the documentarian: “You are looking at a very sick man. I’ve battered it, haven’t I, I’ve f***ing caned it. The heroin and the crack…

“I surrendered to that, and then it was cocaine and the smoking and the alcohol, and now it’s cheese and the saucisson, and the sugar in the tea.”

Back then, Pete was told he would go on to have diabetes and cholesterol problems and the health issues ended up manifesting themselves.

He continued: “It’s all gotta go. They told me a little while ago if you don’t change your diet then you’re gonna have diabetes and cholesterol problems.

“Death’s lurking, you know what I mean? That’s why I carry that stick.”

The star told Louis, that he was doubtful about living to see his little girl grow up and start a family of her own.

Pete also explained that he takes blockers that would prevent heroin from taking effect and still gets “tingles” when thinking about drugs.
