Richard Simmons Retracts Statements About Dying, Apologizes for Causing ‘Confusion’

Richard Simmons clarified that he is not actually “dying” just hours after claiming that he was.

The former fitness instructor took to social media Monday to apologize to fans for sparking concern over a bizarre post about nearing death.

“Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today,” the 75-year-old wrote. “Even the press has gotten in touch with me.

“I am not dying. It was a message about saying how we should embrace every day that we have,” he explained. “Sorry for this confusion.”

Earlier in the day, Simmons made a lengthy post on Facebook about making the most of life before death.

“I have some news to tell you. Please don’t be sad. I am ….dying,” the recluse fitness guru wrote. “Oh I can see your faces now. The truth is we all are dying. Every day we live we are getting closer to our death.

“Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to enjoy your life to the fullest every single day,” he continued. “Get up in the morning and look at the sky… count your blessings and enjoy.”

Simmons stressed the importance of eating three healthy meals a day, occasionally enjoying dessert and getting regular exercise — specifically through his famous video workouts.

However, he noted that above all else, the most important thing is friends and family.

“There is something else very important that you must do. Tell the ones that you love that you love them,” he wrote. “Hug those people and children who you really care for. A big hug really goes a long way.”

“If you have time I want you to listen to a terrific song. It is by Tim McGraw it is called ‘Live Like You Were Dying,’” he concluded. “Live today and don’t forget to pray.”

At the time, Simmons did not reveal why he claimed to be “dying.” Before Simmons backtracked his original post, one of his close friends told People that the “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” host is “happy and healthy” despite the alarming message.

Although the ’80s workout icon took a step back from the spotlight in 2014, he often used Facebook to share messages with his fans.

In January 2024, Simmons revealed that he dropped his manager and publicist so that he could “live a quiet life and be peaceful.”

In the decade since Simmons disappeared from the public eye, there have been many rumors as to why he chose to ditch his high-profile lifestyle.

While some suggested that he was being held hostage by his housekeeper — which a 2017 police investigation proved untrue — there were other theories that he was undergoing gender reassignment surgery, which he vehemently denied.

Simmons has never revealed why he decided to step back from the spotlight.
