Ricky Gervais wins at Golden Globes despite scandal – and host jokes about is absence

Ricky Gervais secured the inaugural award for Best Stand-Up Comedy on Television for his special Armageddon at tonight’s Golden Globes.

The decision, however, sparked mixed reactions among the audience and online because of the recent backlash to some of his jokes.

Presenting the award, comedian Jim Gaffigan humorously noted the long-overdue recognition of stand-up comedians in major awards shows, playfully jabbing at the traditionally glamorous attendees.

Joining Gervais in the nominee list were Amy Schumer for Emergency Contact, Sarah Silverman for Someone You Love, Chris Rock with Selective Outrage, Trevor Noah for Where Was I, and Wanda Sykes for I’m an Entertainer.

With Gervais not at the ceremony, Gaffigan jokingly got confused when someone else came out with the award.

“You’re not Ricky Gervais,” he said, before explaining: “Ricky couldn’t be here tonight. I’ll accept this award on his behalf. Gimme it.”

Responces on Twitter ranged from: “My #GoldenGlobes2024 predictions are largely off tonight. My fault for assuming that in the new stand-up comedy category they wouldn’t pander so hard that they gave it previous Globes host Ricky Gervais.”

To: “The only thing worse than ricky gervais winning would be if he were actually there to accept his award so somebody up above was looking out for us #GoldenGlobes

It comes after Gervais esponded to criticism that he faced over his joke about terminally ill children who suffer from cancer.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake today, he defended his remarks standing firmly with his choice of words. He said: “In the actual skit, I say ‘I’ve been doing a lot of video messages lately for terminally ill children. Only if they request it. I don’t burst into hospitals and say, ‘wake up baldy’.”

The clip from the comic’s “Make-A-Wish” skit outraged viewers after it surfaced on social media. People have since petitioned for it to be removed from the streaming service’s show – and at the time of reporting had reached 4,300 signatures.

During the interview, he said: “I’m literally saying in the joke that I don’t do that. But people have a reaction. They don’t analyse it. They feel something – that’s what offence is. It’s a feeling. That’s why ‘I’m offended’ is quite meaningless. What do you want me to change?”

When asked about the petition, he responded: “Good luck. That’s what I say to them. Good luck. I’ll even retweet it”.
