Sarah Paulson Went Against Hollywood And Refused To Shoot A “Deepfake” Scene With Jack Nicholson

Highlights

  • Sarah Paulson refused to shoot a scene with a CGI Jack Nicholson in Ratched, showing her aversion to working with deepfakes in Hollywood.
  • Keanu Reeves also rejects deepfakes and has implemented a strict rule in his contract against using them in films.
  • Both Paulson and Reeves feel that extreme editing and the use of deepfakes take away an actor’s agency and point of view in their performances.

Sarah Paulson has done a lot of good for the business. Among the positives included helping out her peers, like keeping a struggling Pedro Pascal “alive.”

Paulson also speaks truthfully about Hollywood and how things tend to get out of control in the editing room. We’ll reveal her thoughts on a certain scene with Jack Nicholson, and why she turned the proposition down. We’re also going to take a look at a major actor that agrees with Paulson’s mindset, Keanu Reeves.

Lots of stars aren’t into deepfakes, and Keanu went as far as to put it in his contract.

Let’s take a look at what the stars had to say.

Sarah Paulson And Sandra Bullock Once Bonded Over This Sad Experience

Sarah Paulson and Sandra Bullock have more than movies in common.

Sarah Paulson Refused To Shoot A CGI Scene With A Computerized Jack Nicholson In Ratched

Ryan Murphy’s Ratched was a major success. Season one received strong reviews back in 2020, and fans are still hoping for a season 2 to be released, though there still isn’t any type of confirmation. What we do know is that there were plans for future seasons, including a possible scene between Sarah Paulson and Jack Nicholson.

Paulson teased the idea of Ratched meeting Cuckoo’s Nest. However, the actress would admit that it wouldn’t happen during season 2, and a major part was creative differences. Paulson wasn’t into the idea of working alongside a CGI version of Jack Nicholson.

Paulson revealed, “I don’t know that we would ever go into the [‘Cuckoo’s Nest’] hospital, simply because — and this is me saying this, I don’t know what Ryan’s plan would be — I certainly don’t want to see me acting opposite a computer-generated Jack Nicholson,” Paulson said.

“I mean, I don’t think that sounds like a good idea. So I think if we end up in that era, it would be more about what Nurse Ratched’s life was when she turned the key in her white uniform, coming back into her house from those days at the hospital with all those events that happened there.”

Pedro Pascal and Sarah Paulson share an incredible bond that has many believing that they’ve actually dated.

Credit to Paulson for staying true to her vision. In truth, she’s far from the only actor in Hollywood to turn down the idea of a deepfake.

Sarah Paulson Isn’t The Only Actress To Refuse The Use Of Deepfakes

In 2023, Keanu Reeves also made headlines for his interview alongside Wired. Keanu was applauded for going against Hollywood and implementing a strict rule in his contract, which refuses to do deepfakes in films.

Keanu tells the outlet, “Yeah, digitally. I don’t mind if someone takes a blink out during an edit,” Reeves said. “But early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s, I had a performance changed. They added a tear to my face, and I was just like, ‘Huh?!’ It was like, I don’t even have to be here.”

The actor continues, “What’s frustrating about that is you lose your agency. When you give a performance in a film, you know you’re going to be edited, but you’re participating in that. If you go into deepfake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary. It’s going to be interesting to see how humans deal with these technologies.”

He concludes, “They’re having such cultural, sociological impacts, and the species is being studied. There’s so much ‘data’ on behaviors now.”

Keanu Reeves was extra emotional when the interviewer brought up a sensitive topic.

Keanu is open to using minor forms of CGI, but ultimately, like so many other stars in Hollywood, the actor feels like things are being taken to the extreme when it comes to edits. Hard to argue.

Sarah Paulson Has A Different Take When It Comes To Taking On Roles

Similar to Keanu, Sarah Paulson has a unique take on Hollywood. Speaking alongside The Guardian, Paulson stated that, “If I’m terrified, I feel compelled to do it.” Sarah admitted to taking on roles that provide her with a very uncomfortable challenge.

“It is so odd for someone like me, because I am such a nervous kind of person, prone to anxiety, and I think if I feel terrified to do it, I almost feel compelled, that I don’t have a choice.”

Paulson revealed she’s different in real life, and has the opposite outlook. “I run from bees. I don’t like planes. But with work, it’s like…” She growls, pitches her voice low. “Give it to me!”

Ultimately, her relationship with Ryan Murphy was a major part of breaking out of her comfort zone. “I do think we have some things in common. We were both sort of different [as kids]. We were, I think, both ‘big feeling’ kind of people.”

Whatever the case might be, it is clear that the two have great chemistry together.
